New York City is in the early stages of a massive physical transformation.

As the city prepares for rising seas, stronger storms and a changing climate, billions are being invested in construction that will shape New York for decades to come.

Preparing for a changing climate means building a stronger New York for the future.

See 4 ways NYC is already building for a changing climate and what that means for the city’s future: https://underconstructionnyc.news/p/4-ways-nyc-is-building-for-a-changing-climate

For Rodrigo Garcia, joining the union changed more than his career. It changed what he could provide for his family.

After years of inconsistent nonunion work, there were times when making ends meet meant worrying about whether he could afford diapers or formula for his young daughter.

Finding his path to the union gave Rodrigo the stability, security and opportunity he had been working toward. Today, he and his wife are raising four children and looking toward a future that once felt out of reach.

“I’m living proof,” Garcia said. “The union actually does wonders.”

The rights workers have today were fought for by generations who refused to accept less. The work is not finished.

What they fought for is worth protecting. Now it is our responsibility to carry that work forward.

For 30 years, the New York City Department of Design and Construction has helped build the New York City we know today.

Its work can be seen in the streets we walk, the libraries and recreation centers our communities share, and the critical infrastructure New Yorkers rely on every day.
Behind that work are the people who have helped turn thousands of projects into a lasting legacy for communities across the five boroughs. As Commissioner Paul A. Ochoa reflects on DDC’s first 30 years, he recognizes the union workers who remain essential to building the city’s future:

“Alongside dedicated men and women union workers, we are delivering the critical infrastructure and public spaces our communities need. They are essential for all of our work.”

After a workplace injury in private construction left Kristopher Lospitalier out of work for more than six months, a friend encouraged him to begin apprenticeship training with the Dockbuilders Union.

Today, he is a member of Dockbuilders Local 1556, where he now has access to strong benefits, greater job security, and a clear path for long-term career growth — opportunities he did not have in his nonunion career.
