I can’t believe we’ve hit 100 followers already! Wow! Thank you all so much! And to show my gratitude, here’s a photo I took a few years ago of Jackie, a Sumatran orangutan, and her daughter 🙂
To get this photo, I spent the two days on a grueling trek through the jungles of Sumatra, Indonesia, looking for these most amazing creatures. Orangutan numbers are threatened every day, mostly due to the palm oil industry and they are considered to be critically endangered. They don't have a large habitat, only living on two islands, Borneo and Sumatra. Jackie is what they call a "semi-wild" Orangutan. She was raised in a rehabilitation center here in the national park and, while she survives perfectly well on her own, she prefers to interact with daily tourists and trekkers on their way through the jungle. She is a self-appointed ambassador for her species. We, as humans, share 96.4% of our DNA with Orangtuans and I only wish I could have spent more time with these amazing, albeit distant, cousins of ours. #sumatranorangutan #orangutan #criticallyendangered #aworldworthsaving
