Karla Jay was an early member of the pioneering gay liberation group, the Gay Liberation Front. One of the few women members, her determination allowed the Gay Liberation Front to create an impact for a separate marginalized group, le****ns.

“I never fought for assimilation. When I became involved in gay liberation, I was radical. We didn't want to assimilate. The assimilation movement was earlier people in the 1950s. We thought, we're here, we're q***r, get used to it.”

Reverend Troy Perry deserves and is owed credit for establishing inclusive Christianity dedicated to LGBTQ rights. In October 1968, he founded the Metropolitan Community Church. Now, the MCC has over 400,000 members and 222 member congregations in 37 countries in every continent but Antarctica.

“There are times when you have to fight for what is right, and you have to fight in their face. I say that over and over again. We can't back away from being who we are.”

“If they mess with us, we have to mess with them.”

Martha Shelley survived the gay assimilation movement and kickstarted gay liberation. She was a founder of the pioneering liberation group, the Gay Liberation Front. With the Gay Liberation Front, she contributed to Come Out! magazine which gave a face to post-Stonewall gays.

“We wanted to overthrow the system, not assimilate into it.”

"What is a le***an? A le***an is the rage of all women condensed to the point of explosion." Nearly fifty years later, this remains Martha Shelley's motto.

With her partner Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon founded The Daughters of Bilitis in 1955, the first le***an civil and political rights organization with a national presence in the United States.

“When I love someone, I feel a great tenderness for them. I may not love them passionately, but I love them dearly. I don’t know how everyone else is, but I just know when I’m in love with someone”

“The fact that I love another woman doesn’t make me a criminal. You have two people together that like each other and decide to have s*x, that’s not a big deal for anyone.”

In 1970, Robert Clement, who at the time was the head of the Eucharistic Catholic Church, founded the Church of the Beloved Disciple. The Church of the Beloved Disciple was the first “gay church” in New York City. It was not the first church to welcome LGBTQ people, but it was the first church labeled as such with openly gay pastors and an almost exclusively gay congregation. With his Church of the Beloved Disciple, Robert Clement’s most important contribution was his performance of gay marriages.

“In 1970, with our clergy and our congregation, I came up with “Holy Union” marriages. The people who had these ceremonies considered themselves, at least before God, married. The New York Post referred to them as gay and mock marriages. It was a turning point in the concept of marriage.”

Randy Wicker is possibly the longest-serving gay activist in America. He is also believed to have organized the first gay protest, with national attention, in America: a picket of Whitehall Street Induction Center in New York City in 1964.

It was through the Gay Activists Alliance that he met Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson for whom legacy’s he has dedicated his life.

“I wrote about the event for all the major gay publications. My article was written with venom dripping off of my fingers.”

“When Sylvia read the article, she saw red. “
