The John Alexander Project

The John Alexander Project The J.A. Project supports the next generation of foreign journalists through our keynote program, the Above the Fray fellowship at NPR.

Above the Fray supports curious, truth-seeking, spirited individuals who wish to cover under-reported regions, but who do not have the financial means or professional support to pursue these stories. Applicants should have at least three but no more than five years' professional experience. Above all, the applicant must express sincere interest in innovative foreign reporting, a curiosity about global cultures and a demonstrated record of journalistic potential.

The NPR Above the Fray fellowship is back, and the application is live!

The fellowship looks a little different this year. The 2021-2022 cycle has been re-engineered for the pandemic era, with changes to pitch criteria and eligibility.

Two major changes this year:

1️⃣ No international travel. We are asking applicants to pitch us an international story that can be told domestically, on one of two themes: (1) global public health -or- (2) international migration.

2️⃣ Eligible applicants should now have 5-7 years of professional work experience.

Start getting your pitch together. Apply on our website by January 15.

A year ago, Above the Fray fellow, Kat Lonsdorf, pitched us on a series out of Fukushima.
