The Enemy Dog Who Became an American Hero.

Zenshin was a Japanese Army dog captured by American soldiers in the Pacific during WWII. Instead of hurting him, the Americans adopted him.

He switched sides instantly. He began leading American patrols, sniffing out hidden Japanese caves and traps. He saved dozens of American lives by betraying his former masters.

After the war, his handler brought him back to the USA. When Zenshin died, he was given a rare honor: He is one of the very few animals buried with military honors, a testament to the fact that loyalty knows no flag.

During WWII, soldiers stationed on remote islands often got lonely. On Santa Catalina Island, the Coast Guard adopted a wild Pelican named Paddy.

Paddy didn't just hang around; he drilled with the men. When they marched in formation, Paddy would waddle behind them in step. When they stood at attention, he would stand tall. He even learned to catch beer cans thrown to him (and crush them with his beak). He was the only Pelican to be considered an honorary member of the Coast Guard.

During the War of 1812, the USS Constitution was the pride of the American Navy. But the ship had a secret weapon: A terrier named Guerriere.

The dog was actually captured from a British ship! The American sailors adopted him. During battles, he hated the British. He would run around the deck barking at the incoming cannonballs.
In one famous account, when British sailors tried to board the ship, the little terrier attacked them, biting their ankles and causing chaos, allowing the Americans to push them back. He was a turncoat, but a patriot!

Laddy was an Airedale Terrier, a breed known for being stubborn and tough. In World War I, he was a messenger dog.
During a heavy firefight, his unit needed to send a vital message to the rear guard. The human runners had all been killed. They sent Laddy.

Laddy took off sprinting. A sniper's bullet caught him in the leg. He stumbled, but got up. Another bullet hit his jaw. He kept running.
He ran for miles, bleeding and broken. When he finally reached the commanding officer, he sat down, allowed the message to be taken from his collar, and then collapsed and died. The officer wrote in the official log: "Message delivered by Laddy. Dog died of wounds. A true soldier."
