There are many things to like about 3D, cost benefits, time savings, not having to buy an entire photo crew lunch.
The thing that stands out though is your ability to be as creative as you like. Just about anything you imagine can be modeled and then rendered.
The majority of "retouching" is also done during the 3D process, so you don't have to worry so much about that.
If your idea or your clients product is refined, no problem and no re-shoot. The changes are simply made to your master scene and you're back up and running.
Take a look at the iMug walk through below for a quick intro on getting started.

1) Step one in getting 3D into your workflow is determining if you actually need it in the first place. Sounds strange but 3D isn't the best for all situations. 3D is however the solution if you're an Advertising Art Director, Product Designer/Manager or Manufacturer and your project meets any of the following criteria;

A) Your product is still in the prototype stage, but you need a finished image for promotion/advertising etc.

B) Your product just plain doesn't photograph well (happens often in medical/pharmaceutical advertising) .

C) You need a sectional view or some other angle or lighting that's impossible with traditional photography.

D) You simply realize the "WOW" factor associated with 3D imagery and want the best solution for your valued clients.

After you have determined that 3D is right for your project, like all things creative, it begins with a concept. Most often a drawing or illustration. The more technical the better, but the ultimate point is to relay your concept in a way that it can be best understood, then taken to the next step, Modeling.

2) Modeling is the process of taking your product or idea and transforming it into a collection of gray polygons that best resemble your initial idea or product. There isn't much input on your part here, the real fun doesn't begin until the next few steps, Texturing/Shading.

3) Texturing/Shading is the process of applying real world properties to the polygons. The idea is to match your product's materials to the characteristics of their real world counterparts. Color, shading reflection, light absorptance and emittance, transparency etc.
At this stage any complex particle/texture effects may be added as well. Smoke, fire, water, rain, clouds… a bright red Mohawk with a Goatee? (or maybe not).
After texturing is complete, we are now ready to place your product into an environment and light the scene appropriately.
