😢 **MY NIECE LOOKED AT THE FOOD AND WHISPERED, "AM I ALLOWED TO EAT TODAY?"**
When my sister left her five-year-old daughter with me for three days, I thought all I'd have to do was put on cartoons and heat up some food.
But on the very first night, when I served her a bowl of beef soup, she didn't touch her spoon.
Instead, she looked down and asked in a trembling voice:

My name is Rodrigo, and I live in Querétaro.
My sister, Paola, asked me to watch her daughter, Renata, while she traveled to Monterrey for work.
🧳 "Just three days," she said at the door, suitcase in one hand and phone in the other.
"Light dinners. No sweets. And don't let her throw tantrums."
Renata stood glued to her mother's leg.
The strange thing?
She wasn't crying.
She was holding on tightly, as if letting go wasn't an option.
Paola bent down and kissed her forehead.
💬 "Behave yourself. Don't make your mother look bad."
Then she left.
🚪 The door closed.
Renata stared at the empty hallway.
"Want to watch cartoons?" I asked.
She nodded.
But before sitting down, she quietly asked:
"Can I sit here?"
My heart melted.
"Of course, sweetheart. This is your home too."
She didn't smile.
She sat on the very edge of the couch, hands folded neatly on her knees.
Later, I brought out some coloring supplies.
🎨 "Can I use the red one?"
"Sure."
"And the blue one?"
"Of course."
"What if I make a mistake?"
I paused.
"Then we erase it or start another drawing."
She looked at me as if I'd just said something impossible.
All day long, she asked permission for things no child should have to ask permission for.
💧 To drink water.
🚻 To use the bathroom.
😊 To laugh.
🛋️ To touch a pillow.
Even to breathe heavily after running around the living room.
At first, I thought she was shy.
Maybe she missed her mom.
Maybe she was nervous about staying in someone else's house.
But dinner changed everything.
🍲 I made beef soup with potatoes, carrots, and rice.
Simple homemade food.
