Have you ever stopped to think about why you choose the places you travel to?

It may be about more than the destination. ✈️

Maybe you’re drawn to warmer weather.
Maybe you crave adventure, nature, culture, or simply a slower pace.
Maybe you want to reconnect with people—or with yourself.

The places we choose can reveal a lot about what we value and what we may be wanting more of in this chapter of life.

Travel isn’t always about escaping your everyday life.

Sometimes, it’s a way of discovering what makes you feel most alive. 🌎

So before choosing your next destination, ask yourself:

What kind of experience do I really want right now?

Your answer might tell you something important about the life you’re creating—not just the trip you’re planning.

Most of us have had some version of this moment. Someone asks who we are, we say our name, and then there’s that small pause where the job title used to go.

For decades, that title did a lot of quiet work. It told people what we did, and in a way, it told us who we were. When the role winds down, the pause can feel a little uncomfortable at first.

I’d gently offer another way to see it. That pause may be an opening, a bit of room to notice the parts of you that were there long before the title and are still here now.

How do you introduce yourself these days? I’d love to hear it in the comments.

And if you’d like a simple place to start, I put together a free guide on the Five Pillars that, for many of us, tend to matter most in this chapter. Comment PILLARS and I’ll send it to you.

A fulfilling life isn’t built by focusing on just one area.

As we grow older, balance becomes even more important.

Your health matters.
Your relationships matter.
Your sense of purpose matters.
Your financial well-being matters.
And the way you continue to grow, learn, and enjoy life matters too.

That’s why looking at your life through the 5 Pillars of Aging can be so powerful.

It gives you an opportunity to step back and ask:

Where am I thriving?
Where have I been putting myself last?
And where could a small change create a meaningful difference?

Aging well isn’t about having everything perfectly figured out.

It’s about becoming more intentional with the life you’re creating—and making sure the different parts of your life are supporting the person you want to become. ✨

Your next chapter deserves more than simply going through the motions.

It deserves clarity, balance, purpose, and possibility.

Two phrases, almost the same length, pointing in opposite directions.

“I used to be” tells the story with the ending already written. It hands someone your past and leaves them to make of it what they will.

“I’m becoming” leaves the sentence open. It invites the next question instead of closing the conversation.

I know it sounds like a small thing. After decades in industrial settings, I’ve found I can frame that experience as out of date, or as something I’m now bringing somewhere new. The facts don’t change. What changes is the door that opens, and you can usually feel it happen right there in the conversation.

Identity is the pillar at the center of the other four, and it listens closely to the words we use about ourselves.

So fill in the blank for me. “I’m becoming...”

Your job title is something you do.
It’s not the full definition of who you are.

We’re surrounded by labels—our careers, age, roles, accomplishments, and even other people’s expectations of who we’re supposed to be.

And when we repeat those labels long enough, they can quietly become boundaries.

“I’m just a…”
“I’ve always been…”
“That’s not who I am.”
“It’s too late for me to…”

But you are so much more than any box society has placed you in.

You are your experiences, your curiosity, your values, your talents, your dreams—and all the possibilities you haven’t explored yet.

When you stop defining yourself by what you’ve always been, you create space to discover who you could become. ✨

Don’t let a label become a limitation.

Society hands us a label, usually a job title, and for most of our lives we accept it without much thought. I’m an engineer. I’m a nurse. I’m a farmer. It’s convenient, and it’s a bit like describing a work of art by saying it’s a painting. True, and it leaves out nearly everything worth looking at.

A friend of mine once recognized the man sanding his floors as the guitarist of a local band that was starting to get noticed. When he asked about it, the man smiled and said he was only doing the band thing until he could make it big in floor sanding. Society would have called him a laborer. His talent was somewhere else entirely.

Identity sits right at the center of the five pillars for a reason. It’s the one that holds up the others, and it’s usually the first to shrink when we start describing ourselves in the past tense.

You’re still becoming something. That doesn’t stop at any particular age.

Sometimes, the voice that holds us back the most isn’t coming from the outside… it’s coming from within.

That inner voice that says:
“I’m not ready yet.”
“I’m not enough.”
“I should be doing more.”
“What if I can’t do it?”

But growth also means learning to recognize that voice without allowing it to decide who you are or how far you can go.

You don’t need to have everything figured out to move forward.
You don’t need to be the “perfect” version of yourself to begin.

You are in the process of becoming someone new.
A version of you that is more aware, more confident, and more aligned with the life you want to create.

Instead of criticizing who you are today, start honoring who you are becoming. ✨

Your thoughts create patterns.
Your patterns influence your decisions.
And your decisions shape your next chapter.

For most of our lives, “What do you do?” had an easy answer, and it was usually a job title.

When that answer changes, it can be tempting to reach for “I used to be...” and I’ve noticed how quietly that phrase keeps us facing backward. A small shift I’d gently offer is “I’m becoming,” followed by whatever is ahead of you. Your experience doesn’t go anywhere, it simply becomes one more stepping stone on the path you’re still walking.

This week’s episode is about how we describe ourselves, and why the labels we’re handed rarely tell the whole story. You’re far more than a couple of syllables on a business card.

If you’d like to read the full episode, comment FUTURE and I’ll send you the link.
