Ever wonder how the QR code came about? The QR code (Quick Response) was invented in 1994 and was initially designed by a company to track parts as they moved through the automobile assembly process.

The QR Code wasn’t actually introduced to the mainstream public until 2010. This was the year when the first QR code scanners and readers were released on popular smartphone platforms. Yet, it wasn’t until 2011 before they began gaining some traction with the general populace.

But the QR code was labeled a fad and fell out of favor once it gained wide and regular use in events, trade shows, and other forums. Fast forward nearly another decade, and QR codes are back with a vengeance. The 2020 onset of the coronavirus pandemic resulted in global demand for a standard that could convey large amounts of information without humans touching physical items. During 2020 + 2021, the southeast region had the largest influx of high-income consumers moving to this region of the U.S. In the meantime, the northeast experienced a large amount of low and middle-income households moving to states such as New York and New Jersey and a large number of individuals moving out of this region as well. As these individuals get accustomed to their new city/state, out-of-home will be one of the first types of media people will notice. Use OOH to introduce your brand to these potential new customers.
