Heartbreaking Case of Neglect Leads to 10-Year Animal Ban
Kelly Utting, 37, and Daniel Kilty, 42, from Lowestoft, Suffolk, have been banned from keeping animals for 10 years after their miniature dachshund, Duggy, had to be euthanized due to the severe state of neglect he was found in.
In December 2023, Duggy was brought to a vet by a concerned relative. He was in a barely conscious state, suffering from low blood pressure, hypothermia, and extreme emaciation. His ribs, pelvic bones, and vertebrae were clearly visible under his skin, and the vet concluded that he had suffered greatly due to his condition. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done to save him.
Utting and Kilty failed to attend Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court, where they were found guilty of failing to meet Duggy’s basic needs. Both were disqualified from keeping animals for 10 years, fined £1,100 each, ordered to pay £1,081 in costs, and a victim surcharge of £440.
RSPCA inspector Emily Astillberry described the case as heartbreaking, stating that Duggy was one of the thinnest dogs she had ever seen. She emphasized that his condition would not have occurred overnight and that his suffering could have been prevented with proper care and veterinary attention.
The disqualification order means any remaining animals at the address must be rehomed or signed over to the RSPCA, or they will be seized by the police.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to seek veterinary care when animals are unwell. Duggy’s story highlights the critical role organizations like the RSPCA play in protecting animals from neglect and abuse.
Let’s honor Duggy’s memory by advocating for the welfare of all animals. 🐾💔
