This #internationalwomensday, we're celebrating the powerful female forces leading mental health awareness in the music industry, and Hayley Williams of Paramore is a shining example. In a recent article with the The New York Times (link in bio), Williams spoke about her journey of self discovery, accepting her depression/PTSD and beginning the healing process that ultimately lead to the creation of her upcoming solo album.

Bite-Sized Advice vol. 7: Independent Distribution

Did you know independent recorded music generated $821m in 2019? (Source: musicbusinessworldwide) 🤯🤯

Choosing a distributor for your next project isn’t straightforward at all. With so many different distributors with hidden fees and service offerings, it’s really difficult to know where to get started. So here is our Pro and Con breakdown of some of the biggest players in the DIY game, #tunecore #distrokid #cdbaby and the tier of invite only distributors like #unitedmasters #awal #empire
Some take one time fees, some take annual fees, and others just rely on a percentage of generated revenue. Take some notes, your distributor is your best friend as an independent artist these days.

Who do you distribute your music through? What’s your experience with them?

Teaching Inequality: Consequences of Traditional Music Theory Pedagogy

Western art music is not a universal language. It does some things well, other things not as well, and many things not at all. What biases do we create in our students when we declare Western art music to be mandatory knowledge for anyone pursuing formal music studies?

Decolonizing the Music Room

What is the place of blackface minstrel music in education and performance? What should teachers know about the art form? This month, in an extended piece, Brandi Waller-Pace shares a conversation with musician, composer, and amatuer historian Rhiannon Giddens. A resonator is something that takes a wavelength and amplifies it, making it louder, stronger, and more vibrant than before. @resonatorarts aims to do that for the underground music scene, both locally and abroad. And here are the faces behind it. We turned 4 years old this year, and we’re only getting started. If y’all could do me a favor and give us a like on the @resonatorarts page, that would be amazing 🙏🏼.

“Did you know that the right brain develops first? It does so by the time children are 3-4 years of age. The left brain, on the other hand, doesn’t fully come online until children are approximately seven years old; hence the first seven years being recognized as such a critical period in child development.”

Super excited to announce that we're adding Jamie Ehrenfeld to the Resonator team!

A classically trained vocalist and NYU grad, Jamie began working with independent artists in 2015 as a coordinator with the hip hop integration program Fresh Prep. As a Creative Education Fellow with the Music Experience Design Lab at NYU she directed the Ed Sullivan Fellows Program, unlocking access to free professional resources and community for dozens of developing artists throughout New York City - including many public school students she’s encountered as a teacher. She’s provided management and production services to an eclectic roster of artists including Steff Reed, Kelsey Pyro, and Phoenixx, and continues her work as a mentor to this day. She’s thrilled to join the Resonator team and support the growth of an autonomous independent music scene.
