In our schools, Hip-Hop culture is the dominant culture among the students. In Youth Culture Power:
A #HipHopEd Guide to Building Student Teacher Relationships and Increasing Student Engagement,
Jason D. Rawls and John Robinson, educators and hip-hop artists with experience in the classrooms of urban schools, focus their efforts through Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE). They argue that Hip-Hop culture could be useful in building relationships and building student engagement. The approach to achieve this is Youth Culture Pedagogy (YCP). In this volume, the authors lay the groundwork for YCP and how they envision its use within the classroom. YCP is based in a Foundation of Reality Pedagogy (Emdin, 2014), Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995), and HHBE (Hill, 2009; Petchauer, 2009). We define it as a pedagogical approach which uses students own culture to create scenarios to facilitate learning. In Youth Culture Power, the authors put forth their C.A.R.E. Model of youth pedagogy to help teachers create a positive learning environment by building relationships and lessons around students’ own culture. Instead of forcing students to give up the things they frequent, they feel teachers should discuss them and when possible, use them in lessons. The purpose of this book is to present a fresh take on why educators should not discount the culture of youth within the classroom. Book & Album will be available on 6/1/19 📚 + 🎶 #youthculturepower #itsjayare #jrawls #johnrobinsonmusic #youthculture #hiphoped #hiphopeducation #hiphopculture

The report starts with a number: $23 billion. According to EdBuild, that's how much more funding predominantly white school districts receive compared with districts that serve mostly students of color.

"For every student enrolled, the average nonwhite school district receives $2,226 less than a white school district," the report says.

"We have built a school funding system that is reliant on geography, and therefore the school funding system has inherited all of the historical ills of where we have forced and incentivized people to live," she says.

Excited and Grateful to announce that I recently became the lead Teaching Artist & Director of my own School based music program. 🎉🎼🎶🎸

Shout out to ps. 224 for believing in the power of the arts and for investing in music programming for their students. We are truly building something special and I see great things manifesting in the near future.

After teaching for over 10 years with community based organizations, I’m finally empowered, working for myself and containing to do the work that I’m passionate about. I’m looking forward to growing as a leader and empowering the next generation of artists, educators and change makers. Special thanks to KEL SPENCER for being the impactful man and connector to make it happen!!!

“Footwork is a form of resistance against oppressive living conditions. It’s like artistic expression through social liberation.”

As part of a series called "If Cities Could Dance," our friends at KQED Arts produced this video about a few of Chicago's footworkers who challenge the city’s legacy of segregation through lightning-fast moves.

@willsmith said this in a recent clip and I’ve practiced this mantra for a while now. I love my students. I spend time with them beyond the school day. I love my homies. They spend time with me and pour into me. I love them so much. When someone doesn’t want to spend time consistently, it informs me on how I should move. No love lost but certainly knowledge gained. #freedomovereverything

“Why don’t you hand in papers in Ebonics since that is how you talk?” I remember someone asking me this in my early days of grad school. I then explained that, as a student, it was my job to perform particular scholastic duties – including showing a mastery of the traditional APA, MLA, and C...

Women Teach Men

"For me, it’s a matter of empathy – that I believe accusers’ stories about these harmful (almost exclusively) men in music. And if I believe that Ryan Adams’ accusers are telling the truth, and I still make the conscious decision to stream his music or buy a concert ticket, I see that as a selfish act, signifying that I value these women’s stories less than I do a pleasurable listening experience or a night out for myself.

After reading many victims’ stories, I’ve also realized that separating these alleged abusers from their art becomes complicated because in so many cases, their music gave them the platform and resources to commit their alleged crimes."

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

“Over and over again, we have learned that the people who created the art we love have been accused of monstrous acts. The art could be Louie, or Shakespeare in Love, or Manhattan, or The Cosby Show, but at heart, the dilemma is the same: How do I reconcile aesthetic pleasure with moral disgust?” —Constance Grady

When I think about how awesome it is to be featured on a billboard In the middle of time square, I immediately am reminded of how far I've come, how much I've lost, how hard I've worked and how much I've cried and hurt. It really speaks to the cliche sayings about never giving up. And I can't stress enough how much I've been through and how many times I've been told that me and my work aren't legitimate and/or don't matter. I actually went to high school a block away from this billboard on 43rd street and I think about all the hours of practicing, working and dreaming. Mixed with the bullying, hating and fighting, it puts it all into perspective. If you would have asked me 5 years ago if I could see myself touring nationally and internationally, putting out my own music, getting degrees, being featured on billboards, curating events, etc AND on my own terms.... I would tell you that it's a cool idea, but far fetched. You really gotta believe in yourself and follow through because you never know what is possible when you fully apply yourself and make a commitment to winning. There was a time 5 years ago before any of this that I thought that the best life had to offer me had come and gone...people told me I was washed up and I believed them. I say that to say...F**K WHAT PEOPLE SAY, F**K THE BULLSH*T NEGATIVE ASS THOUGHTS IN YOUR HEAD AND THE FEAR OF Failure or looking bad....DO YOU AND LIVE IN YOUR OWN TRUTH. Anything and everything is possible when you lock in and do what God put you here to do. Thank you Scotch Porter for choosing me to be a part of the dope campaign!! 👑🙏🏿 #ScotchPorter #SPBigLeap #BlackExcellence #NewSoulRenaissance
