โœ…All antihypertensive can cause ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION Educate your patient to get up SLOWLY, and dangle their feet on the side of the bed before getting up

โœ…Do not stop antihypertensives abruptly This can cause rebound hypertension, they MUST be tapered

โœ…Antihypertensives are NOT a cure Educate the patient to make healthy lifestyle choices as well. These include exercise, low sodium diet, etc.

โœ…Always monitor heart rate & blood pressure BEFORE & AFTER administration

โœ…If we give the medication when the blood pressure is too low, it can be very dangerous & drop the BP further. We want to lower blood pressure but also keep it at a healthy range, avoiding severe hypotension.

โœ…Monitor labs, especially with potassium-sparing diuretics (AKA Spironolactone!) Hyperkalemia can lead to life-threatening arrhythmias!
