In the 1970s, a group of students of the Staten Island Community College founded the precursor to WSIA, WB2BAZ. It was run out of the broom closet to the Middle-Earth Lounge in the B building on the Sunnyside Campus. The music they played was broadcasted to the college’s cafeteria. After a long battle, the students petitioned to apply for an FM license and got it.

The next group of students, somewhere in the late 70s, applied to the Student Government and Association for money to build studios. In 1980, the college hired a General Manager, Greg Adamo, to handle the daily tasks of the station and coordinate the construction of the studios. In early 1981, an agreement was reached with the Archdiocese of New York for an antenna site and the ability to install phone lines to the transmitter. This is located on the tower on top of Todt Hill (the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard, South of Maine).

On August 31, 1981, WSIA began regularly scheduled programming. We are a 10 watt, Class D station as licensed by the FCC to the College of Staten Island.

Since then, the station has been moved to the Willowbrook campus (where the college is now.)

WSIA is committed to being new and innovative in our programming. We are proud to serve the needs of our community here on Staten Island for 43 years.

To our Alumni, and listeners, thank you for supporting WSIA all those years, today we celebrate the beautiful history of the radio station and remember the beautiful memories and unforgettable friendships made in this place.
