Science Guardian Supporting the right of exceptional minds in science to free speech, publication, media coverage and funding against crowd prejudice and politics

News, views and reviews measured against professional literature in peer reviewed journals (adjusted for design flaws and bias), well researched books, authoritative encyclopedias (not the bowdlerized Wiki entries on controversial topics) and the investigative reporting and skeptical studies of courageous original thinkers among academics, philosophers, researchers, scholars, authors, filmmakers and journalists. Supporting the right of exceptional minds to free speech, publication, media coverage and funding against the crowd prejudice, leadership resistance, monetary influences and internal professional politics of the paradigm wars of cancer, HIV(not)AIDS, evolution, global warming, cosmology, particle physics, macroeconomics, information technology, religions and cults, health, medicine, diet and nutrition.

Mission: To guard scientific values (reason, evidence to support belief) against self interest and other foibles of human nature, by comparing the literature against public claims and other political influence

Gary Null and Richard Gale publish comprehensive paper on the corruption of modern science and medicine

A hard hitting paper unpeeling the rotting onion of modern science and medicine in the West and finding how little there is untouched by the corruption of money and politics has been posted by Gary Null on his Progressive Radio Network show page. We back it up here in case it is subjected to the disappearance which is overtaking more and more of the voices of critics of mainstream beliefs.

A Pioneering Neuroscientist Reports From ‘the Border of Life and Death’

Is this the ultimate science book?

Or is it reading too much into fMRI?

Either way, its message is ominous!

"Moving...gripping...profound, engaging...unforgettable...truly moving...inspirational...simply unputdownable...taking my evening bath while dipping into its pages I finished three hours later with the water cold...a real page turner....required reading...gripping...harrowing...real life scientific thriller."

So ran the blurbs when Into The Gray Zone arrived a couple of months ago from Scribner and then George Johnson who wrote the ultimate "we are going to beat cancer don't worry" book Cancer Chronicles weighed in last Sunday with this sober down to earth review of Into the Gray Zone and the problem it deals with.

He did a brilliant job of saying what the real message of this terrifying book is without saying how horrifying it is. What message?

That we all are going around risking a most horrible fate, which is to be locked inside our brains with senses all working and no way of communicating anything at all to anyone, since we cannot move anything, not even our eyelids like Stephen Hawking (sorry not entirely sure where movement stops with him, but I think its eyelid movement, isn't it?)

Anyhow this Gray Zone is where Adrian Owen found about 20% of vegetative patients in a seemingly comatose state have ended up, when he tested them with new approaches using MRI etc ie they watched a film and reacted emotionally to it and were able to show it in some way.

This morbid investigation adds up to one thing. Whether it may be some new viral disease like one patient or just stepping off the kerb while staring into your email we all have a slim but real chance of becoming trapped in the Gray Zone, unable to show any sign of life but fully aware of what is going on.

Don't think your living will is going to help now that he has revealed that even total blobs know what is going on one fifth of the time ie one in five are conscious and aware. The docs wont follow its instructions for fear of being wrong and sued.

The wretched Owen has succeeded in showing that a fate worse than death is around the corner for us if we don't tuck our smartphones away while walking around in NYC.
Should have called his book Night of the Living Dead.

Science and Policy Treasure Trove at Vast BookExpo 2017

Let's Go - Science at the BookExpo!

Book Expo 2017 May 31 Wed-Jun 2 Fri: Nothing like this huge, multilayered annual celebration of books, the ultimate in handy briefings on the cutting edge on science and current affairs of every field. A great must-go event, bursting with books and book fans of every kind, booksellers, popular authors, and long lines for signed copies of current and future hits.

But the key aspect we have in mind is that it also contains academic press treasure troves of past, present or forthcoming individually polished gems of scholarship and independent research in science and other solid topics, works which unlike the daily or even weekly or monthly media news and talk shows benefit from authors who take personal responsibility for the accuracy and quality of their work, completed outside the confines of government and corporate walls where censors and pr spokesmen prowl.

So get excited about BookExpo coming up fast in NYC at Javits on May 31 Wed to June 2 Fri, it’s for all those interested in books on paper between hard or soft covers as the last easily available repository of the latest worthwhile information from independent authors that unlike the fleeting smartphone or desktop screen display does not vanish into virtual reality, but remains stationery on the page ready for reference with precise marking or emendation or query in the margin, inside real physical books placed within manual grasp on a nearby bookshelf, or displayed open on the desk next to the working screen, or on the bedside table to stabilise one’s last waking moment before peaceful slumber induced by the restful quiet of the night broken only by the turn of the page, that’s what we are talking about and looking forward to – Manhattan’s greatest annual showplace of ideas!

In our case, our particular interest is the state of the academic publishing industry as part of it gravitates to competing more significantly with the trade press, which renders a lot of deep data more accessible, and in the state of science publishing, especially in the first days of a new era where the new President of the US is apparently happy to remain in total ignorance of what science reveals about the state of the world and its future, and to contradict it whenever it conflicts with his personal interests and profit motive, or his belief in himself as the most admirable human being in the world.

NYAM event uncovers vaccine dissent in audience

Vaccine historian maps way in which paradigm was sold

To her as well as us, apparently!

But not to some in audience....

Vaccine advocate
Historian Lisa Rosner’s talk at the castle of established medical practice The New York Academy of Medicine turned out as advertised, an illustrated run through of how vaccines have been sold to the general public since Lady Mary Montagu wrote her famous letter to London from Turkey recounting how no one worried about smallpox – which had killed her brother and left her scarred for life in England, where one in three died – in Istanbul in 1717 where they had children’s parties and rubbed them with mild smallpox scabs and thus “engrafted” they were immune to strong smallpox for the rest of their lives, after which this historical entertainment was followed by a run through of her novel Internet game “The Pox Hunter”, exploring the art of persuasion, where you make choices of various approaches such as ‘scare’ or ‘flatter’ to influence people to be vaccinated instead of rejecting it resolutely out of unfamiliarity and mistrust, so all in all this rapidly delivered talk was a reassuring parade of successful vaccine advocacy by one cultural historian who at the end of it confirmed that she was indeed an advocate for vaccination herself, had never encountered any respectable objection to the practice, and who dismissed the recent expose film VAXXED, which demonstrates that the CDC sat on and then secretly disposed of evidence in its own study that indicated that vaccinations had led to autism among black kids, as “fake news”, and said she was unfamiliar with any scientific studies which raised valid concerns, and viewed Andrew Wakefield, the much smeared English doctor and researcher who was a victim of pseudo journalist Brian Deere’s misleading reporting which resulted in the completely uncalled for loss of his medical license, as precisely the scoundrel that Deere had implied, when in fact as an indignant member of the audience pointed out Wakefield’s study had not asserted that vaccines caused autism anyway, but merely found that there seemed to be a correlation that emerged from a study of digestive ailments in 12 young patients that should be looked into further, so all in all members of the audience at the Academy who had hoped for guidance on the tortured topic of whether there was anything to worry about with vaccines beyond the standard vaccine boosting by the established purveyors were disappointed, although we did press upon her a printout of the exemplary page of Dr Suzanne Humphries’ site enumerating the reasons which have so far emerged from medical studies that review is called for in many areas of this highly remunerative field, where a single vaccine is reputed to be worth $1 billion in commercial payoff for the maker, though it seemed unlikely that she would read it later with any receptivity, given that she is like most of us a fully paid up member of the human race who will very naturally find it extremely hard to change long held assumptions when they have been part of her entertaining public speaking, teaching and Web activity for some time, but at least she might come up with appropriate answers to the widespread and growing skepticism which is threatening the routine creation of herd immunity to many diseases mild as well as dangerous, including whooping cough and measles which critics note had been largely suppressed with escalating hygiene before any vaccine arrived, though a suggestion that vaccines for them could be foregone drew a loud gasp of “Oh no!” from the audience, and a remark from an MD present of “Has anybody here seen an iron lung recently?” came in answer to any idea that polio could be conquered without a vaccine, although the Salk vaccine notoriously had to be withdrawn after causing too many cases of polio even though it was a supposedly killed agent, which presumably demonstrated how “attenuated” vaccines can transform into live threats through mutation, killing at least 200 in that instance, a phenomenon possibly accounting for the controlled BMJ study showing that of school age children who contracted whooping cough, 86% were fully vaccinated up to date, information contained in the very readable and calm account of the scientific doubts about the wisdom of using vaccines without careful review felt by Suzanne Humphries, a practicing doctor who has investigated the situation fully by at least reading the limited amount of science available on the defects of the massively established and promoted practice that the speaker, like most of us, takes for granted is beyond reproach, while criticism is blocked by political prejudice and action, including the aversion to challenging speakers built in to such institutions as the Academy, where all present, even the questioners, feel it is merely good manners to curb dissent from the views of a charming presenter trying to enlighten them in lively fashion with the basics of the historical advance of the ruling paradigm.
That

After my experiences in the hospital system and thoroughly examining both sides of the vaccination debate, it is clear that the issue is not ‘settled long ago, and laid to rest’ as most of the medical profession says it is.

Hacks seem to be saying it wont happen but there is a path forward for the Brevote judging from the petition site which has over 4 million signatures to date. Rule says can redo if turnout and votes too small.

EU Referendum Rules triggering a 2nd EU Referendum

We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum.

Inspired - The ultimate Trump handbook arrives from Pat Clark just in time for the Jul 19 Republican Implosion, sorry, Convention

Donfire: Donald Trump's Scorched Earth Campaign Against American Complacency

The perfectly timed appearance of this irreverent but hugely informative package of the real dope on Trump is as much a phenomenon as Trump's astonishing success in demolishing the Republican party on the way very likely to the Oval Office, not only because it is comprehensive in its coverage of where Trump came from, is now coming from, and will go later, including many shocking and often grubby surprises, but every single page is written with a flair and a panache rarely seen in political writing today in book form, a freely ranging outburst of humor and irony that fills every paragraph with the spirit of distanced intelligence but witty enthusiasm too for the outrageous behavior and often totally wrong claims from our possible President-to-be, not to mention some equally telling take downs of candidate Clinton, some of it gleefully over the top but always totally informed by Clark's long experience in meeting and reporting on US political and cultural heroes following a New York upbringing and Columbia University education, but clearly reveling in the freedom from interference and second guessing that comes with independent author self publishing and which in this case has allowed this the current ultimate Trump briefing to emerge before the convention on the 19th which so desperately needs it. The only question it leaves unanswered is how did Clark do it? Trump seems to be inspiring books and satire all over, but this is certainly the one to buy right now. Masterly.

Surprising New Evidence Shows Bias in Police Use of Force but Not in Shootings

Blacks NOT more often shot by cops than white in US

The trouble with instant media babble in print and on Charlie Rose etc is that they have to comment without knowing anything for sure about the overall facts, for example, the Times yesterday carries news of a study by Roland Fryer (who is black and awarded the John Bates Clark medal for being the most promising economist under 40) that found out that across the country the police are no more likely to shoot a black "suspect" than a white one, although more likely to rough them up with force abuses like pushing up against a wall or on the ground, handcuffs without being arrested, and other insulting and disrespectful behavior. You would think that someone would tell Obama this, too. A national furore and debate on the wrong assumption that recent shocking cases show general bias.

"Mr. Fryer found that in such situations, officers in Houston were about 20 percent less likely to shoot if the suspects were black. This estimate was not precise, and firmer conclusions would require more data. But in various models controlling for different factors and using different definitions of tense situations, Mr. Fryer found that blacks were either less likely to be shot or there was no difference between blacks and whites."

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/12/upshot/surprising-new-evidence-shows-bias-in-police-use-of-force-but-not-in-shootings.html?_r=0

Contradicting conventional wisdom: When it comes to the most lethal form of force, a study finds no racial bias.
