“Blending areas of study like urban planning or design with my arts practice feels like weaving together the analytical and the intuitive. With an installation on view at through Labor Day, the landscape artist and designer offers both joy and a warning against climate change by elevating overlooked local horticulture.

“I feel like my pen is really strong in Spanish. It’s not hard for me to write a song in Spanish. There’s a lot of intricate lyrics. You can play a lot with metaphors. It feels like me being me. I’m not trying to fit into anything that I’m not, but I know a lot of people are going to relate to what I’m representing even if their story is different. Every Mexican-American grows up really different depending on what part of the U.S. they’re from. So I’m just doing my part, just playing my story.”

“I needed it to move through me in a narrative way. I think it’s maybe from writing a script or writing a story, it just felt so right to feel and follow Marsha in her flow, because she was also an artist.”

“I think I’m in a really privileged place at the moment, and I don’t take it for granted. I’m very much grateful to be where I am, and at the same time, I think I’ve worked a lot in therapy to recognize that, okay, I’ve worked hard and I deserve to be here.”

“It took me a while to be okay with being gay, and that was the other reason. I still feel like some kids feel that way. They feel like they have to come out, so I did it for a kid like me in some other town.”

Coming off of two difficult years beset by injuries and burnout, the American hurdler is having a historic season of competition after coming out as gay last summer and learning to find the joy in every day.

“I believe that we are at a time when storytelling is absolutely crucial and could be something that helps harmonize the political outlook of the world at the moment. It’s important. We need to still be, as a planet, effectively doing what we did when we were in medieval times sitting around a fireplace and being guided by didactic stories that’ll help us through this uncomfortable period of time.”

Leading Netflix’s new hit series as the irascible detective Carl Morck, the English actor and our June digital cover subject plays against type and digs deep for a powerful portrayal of the aftereffects of trauma.
