šŸ Peak color has arrived in the Adirondacks.
Lake Placid and Tupper Lake are reporting peak conditions this week, while Whiteface, Old Forge, Newcomb, Lake Pleasant and much of the interior Adirondacks are near peak.
And Lake George? Still only about 25% changed. There's plenty more fall to come farther south.

The loons are getting ready to leave us. šŸ–¤

One of our favorite Adirondack summer residents has a rather different winter address.

Each fall, Common Loons leave their freshwater breeding grounds and head for the coast, spending winter on the ocean. Some Adirondack loons travel as far south as North Carolina and Florida.

Lake bird by summer. Ocean bird by winter. Who knew?

Youā€™ve probably seen them. But do you know their story? šŸ§¹

Theyā€™re 45 to 85. They dance to classic rock. They travel with broomsticks. And Adirondack crowds canā€™t seem to get enough of them.

Meet The Adirondack Dancing Witches.

In the newest ADK Talks, Crystal, Raven and Shabby take us behind the broomsticksā€”from the German phenomenon that helped inspire the group to the costumes, choreography and 18 women who now make up their Adirondack coven.

But somewhere along the way, our conversation became about something more: friendship, community, healingā€”and what happens when grown women give themselves permission to play.

And yes, apparently being a Dancing Witch is a little like being a rock star.

Would you have done this at 20?

Eleven weeks in the Adirondacks. No phone. No Wi-Fi. No indoor plumbing.

Right now, a group of St. Lawrence University students is living and learning off-grid as part of the Adirondack Semester.

They take classes. Cook together. Haul water. Explore the Park. And figure out how to live in a small community without many of the distractions the rest of us take for granted.

We talked with the people behind the program about what happens out thereā€”and why some of the most important lessons aren't found in a textbook.

You probably know the cabin. You may know Woodswoman.

But how well do you know Anne LaBastille?

Fifty years after "Woodswoman" was published, weā€™re going beyond the Adirondack legend with Penny Harr, author of the new Anne LaBastille: A Biography of the Woodswoman.

Anne was a writer and fiercely independent Adirondack icon. But she was also a wildlife ecologist, international conservationist, licensed outdoor guide and outspoken environmental advocate whose work took her far beyond her cabin on Twitchell Lake.

And the real woman turns out to be even more fascinating than the legend.

Just slow down. Look around. Breathe.

On the new ADK Talks, NYS-certified outdoor guide Nathan June introduces us to forest bathingā€”a practice built around experiencing the outdoors differently.

For Nathan, that idea is deeply personal. After a serious health crisis and liver transplant changed the trajectory of his life, time in nature became part of how he thought about recovery, well-being, and simply being present.

We talk about why even experienced hikers can find slowing down surprisingly difficult, the wonderfully named idea of ā€œsoft fascination,ā€ what happens when you sit still in the woods long enough for the wildlife to forget you're thereā€”and the porcupine that did exactly that. šŸ¦”
