Hello friends! After almost a decade of writing, producing and engaging learners for EM-News, we have decided to retire The Procedural Pause. I am not sad! This is actually an exciting time. I am grateful for a BRAND NEW writing and recording opportunity! Stay tuned for more news soon.

The PP Blog will still be fully accessible online at EM-news.com in the archives (including all the fun videos and bonus content). It's been a lot of fun and the cases were memorable. The patients were kind and God bless them for sharing their stories and images so others could learn.

But we have MORE and it’s even BETTER!

It is time to grow !!

Here is December, 2020's last and FINAL blog. I couldn't be happier that it includes my darling girl and inspiration for it all, Eleanor. Enjoy. And, thank you.

This month we got personal. Fish hook heroes! Watch Jim demonstrate on a steak and Martha show you a new hook earring. 2 videos one great blog.

“I have been bitten by many pike, and Jim has gutted many walleyes. We have caught sunfish and blue gills with simple hooks, lines, and our hands. We have fly-fished in parts of the world to which few people ever travel. Although we have some unique fish stories, we used that time to talk about everything from medicine to hopes and dreams, politics and prose. We try to find joy and humor in as much of life as we can. We hope you are able to do the same in your time away from the bedside. The best fish story is always the one that got away. Thanks for reading!”

As many of you know, my pops and I write a monthly column, The Procedural Pause. We have been writing this for over a decade. We cover all things procedures. But, what many of you may not know is that Jim (my dad) has been writing his In Focus column in EMNews for almost 40 years. His wisdom and experience has been invaluable to me ... and to other providers and patients. This month, he started a series on su***de. The first column is on patient su***de, soon to be followed by provider su***de. BOTH are serious problems in the united states... and worldwide. This is worth the read, for anyone - not necessarily in healthcare. Knowing about the patient (or friend, or family member) who is at high risk for su***de or has contemplated su***de is critical to stopping it's wrath. 800,000 people die from su***de every year in the world and is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Let us remind you, that top 10 also includes diagnoses like diabetes, copd, heart disease, trauma and cancers. Su***de is a frequent occurrence and we can all play a role in preventing death. This is not something to ignore. You are not alone. We, as a healthcare community, are working to help prevent deaths by su***de and open a door to communication, so people feel they have a place to go when in need. But, if you or someone you care about needs help, it is best to recognize their attempts or thoughts early - because it can truly drastically change what their future may become. We are in this together.
