A captured IJA Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu at Clark Field during 1945. The Toryu was a two-seat, twin-engine heavy fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army throughout WWII. Originally serving as a long-range escort-fighter, the design — as with most heavy fighters of the period — fell prey to smaller, lighter, more agile single-engine fighters. As such, the Ki-45 instead served as a day and nighttime interceptor and strike fighter.

USAAF crew of Boeing B-17G 42-102700 “I’ll Get By”. On August 2, 1944, a week after this photograph was taken, they were hit by flak over occupied France at 1753 hours. This aircraft had moved from the low group into the lead position because of equipment trouble found by the wing leader. The left wing of the aircraft was hit, the wing tip broke off and the wing burst into flame. The aircraft slid to the left with fire spreading. After loosing altitude and dropping back it exploded violently. Other flight crews reported bodies thrown out of the aircraft when it exploded. Three chutes were seen to open and all three became POWs, the other 7 were KIA.
