Illuminating the Truth: The Role of Photography in Climate Change | PDNedu

As the climate crisis becomes more urgent, so, too, does the role of photography in raising awareness. For those who haven’t been directly affected by the destructive impact of global warming, it may feel like an abstract idea—or the extent of the impact may not be understood. Climate photography helps to make visceral what could only be imagined before. Josh Haner and Virginia Hanusik are two photographers who are dedicated to illuminating and combating climate change.

Julia Stotz on Lighting Still Lifes | PDNedu

L.A.-based photographer Julia Stotz has flexed her creative muscles for brands such as Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, The New York Times and UberEats. While still-life photography may sound superficially straightforward—nothing’s moving, after all—there’s actually a lot more to it than meets the eye. We asked Stotz to break down how she approaches her still lifes. Read more about Stotz on our website or in the Fall 2019 issue of PDNedu magazine.

Jessica Pettway is a New York-based photographer who was recognized in PDN‘s 30 in 2019. According to Pettway, the most important thing that students who are studying photography can do is experiment because it’s the only way that you can find out what kind of photography you like. “Fortunately there is no set path to becoming a photographer, so it’s never too early or too late to choose your own adventure!” she says.

Photo Books: Review of American Boys by Soraya Zaman | PDNedu

Soraya Zaman’s book, American Boys, is the evolution of an online project the photographer began in 2016 as a way to showcase a diversity of trans narratives. The internet is rife with demonizing images of people who do not adhere to societal expectation of gender and sexuality; Zaman wanted to increase the positive imagery of the trans-masculine community available online and create a safe space for genderqueer individuals to explore their identities. Their beautiful book was published by Daylight Books in 2019.

But one thing that really stood out to me was his commitment to achieve his transition goals. He is doing it alone, from paying for his hormone...

Brittainy Newman Turns A Tragedy Into Art | PDNedu

Brittainy Newman trained as a ballerina for 12 years before an injury cut her career short. As a student studying photojournalism at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2018, her love of ballet led her to tell the story of the Flower City Ballet’s annual performance of the Nutcracker. Although it was their eleventh time staging the production, it was the first time they’d ever performed without the guidance of their founder, Wayne Blatt, who had recently passed away. She used a Nikon D810 to capture the video for her final project, The Gift of Dance; It was Newman’s first time shooting a video, but she believes that the medium allowed her to best capture the emotional experience of performing while in mourning.

Have you told a story through video that captures one of your passions? Enter Nikon’s Follow Your Passion contest. For full details and rules on how to enter, visit followyourpassion.com.

Mike Mezeul II Finds the Perfect Lighting for the Northern Lights | PDNedu

When Mike Mezeul II put down his phone and looked up, he encountered the night sky. He's been documenting its many wonders ever since. Entirely self taught, he relies on his Nikon gear to reveal the potential of what can be captured. For example, an incredibly rare display of the northern lights over Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, depicted above. Mezeul II took the extraordinary photograph with a Nikon D810 and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens.

Isabel Epstein thinks that activism has a place within art. "Viewers can be captivated by beauty, and then come to a realization about an issue through that captivation,” she says. A recent series, shot with a Nikon D850, calls attention to the issue of plastic pollution in the world's oceans using a fashion aesthetic.

Taken with a Nikon Z7, Billy H.C. Kwok's series "Hong Kong: After the Handover" captures how the territory continues to evolve even 20 years after it was handed over to China from Britain. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kwok has a personal connection to the city that fuels his passion for taking photographs of it.

Brittainy Newman Turns A Tragedy Into Art | PDNedu

Brittainy Newman stopped training as a ballerina when she broke her ankle at the age of 13, but her passion for dance has never left her. "You can feel dance,” she says. “Dance has its own story, and stories have always followed me.” While a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Newman created "The Gift of Dance," a short film about a Rochester-based ballet company that had just lost its founder to cancer. The film was entirely shot using Nikon gear.

Julius Shulman's Architectural Photography | PDNedu

"What set Shulman apart from other photographers was his ability to humanize the clean, sharp lines of modernist architecture, which at one time was perceived as alien and even uninhabitable. Known for working with black-and-white infrared film, which deepened the depths and contrasts of the angular structures he captured, Shulman often inserted signs of ideal domesticity—women lounging by a pool, children riding bikes, couples sipping cocktails—into his images as a way of aestheticizing modern living."

At a time when citizenship is increasingly being called into question—who is able to call the country where they physically reside their home—our hope is that the images and words in the Fall 2019 issue of PDNedu tell a story about a future where everyone has place to call “home.”

PDNedu talks to Chantal Anderson, Jennifer Garza-Cuen and Shawn Bush and more about identity, the idea of a place versus the reality of it and the question “Where are you from?”

Madeleine Morlet Captures an Eternal Coming of Age in a Series Shot in Coastal Maine | PDNedu

Informed by a plethora of influences, from Donna Tartt's "The Secret History to Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," photographer Madeline Morlet's series "I Promise I'll Never Forget" captures the exquisite beauty inherent in coming of age. Shot in coastal Maine soon after Morlet gave birth to her first child, the series emits a sense of the timeless nature of certain human experiences.

Elisabeth's Pearl (Rockport, Maine), 2019 Most new mothers experience a profound shift in identity. For Madeleine Morlet, the shift was especially pronounced. When she was six months pregnant, she moved from London, where she was shooting and producing regularly for publications such as Vice and i-D...

Mike Mezeul II Finds the Perfect Lighting for the Northern Lights | PDNedu

Since 2016, Mike Mezeul II has been photographing the Northern Lights, a phenomenon that is the result of the Earth’s atmosphere colliding with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere. Entirely self-taught, Mezeul II has learned how to capture his subjects through trial and error. In conversation with PDNedu, Mezeul II provided some tips for photographers looking to begin shooting the night sky.

1. Turn the night sky into a story.

“There is nothing more boring, in my opinion, of just a photo of the sky. Find a way to tie in that night sky with a cool foreground or story. A great foreground with a beautiful night sky transforms a night image into a piece of art.”

Got a question for Mezeul II? Comment below and we will connect you with his advice!

Mezeul II’s photo of the northern lights above the snow covered fjords of Lofoten, Norway was captured with a Nikon D850 and an AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED at 21mm, 3”, F2.8 and ISO 2500.
