Calling on pianists! This July at Juilliard Extension, I will teach an in-person 4-day Piano Duet Intensive!
It is designed to enhance your experience of playing in a piano duet.
"...Taught by our faculty and alumnus, Konstantin Soukhovetski, who has over 17 international awards and has performed in piano duets for over two decades, including double piano concerti with the orchestra. In this course, Konstantin will share his insight into technical ex*****on as well as his unique, acting-derived approach to interpretation, Narrative Musicianship.
The 4 duets (8 students) will receive one-on-one coaching as well as group lecture. The 4-day intensive will culminate in a performance. The repertory choices: Rachmaninoff Piano Suite #1, Debussy Prélude á l’apres-midi d’un Faune, Mozart Two Piano Sonata K. 448 in D, Milhaud Scaramouche.
Optional: score will be made available of Konstantin’s two-piano arrangement of Edith Piáf ‘s most beloved songs. (4-minute concert fantasy)"
This course requires an online application to be considered for placement.

Narrative Musicianship philosophy is based on Konstantin Stanislavky's acting 'method' technique of emotional recall and inner narrative creation to improve communicative skills for instrumentalists. From my acting experience in Moscow State Satire Theater I have spent 25 years practicing it on myself and developing a particular set of tasks to give abstract music an inner life. While not a 'program' for the music the secret narrative enables the performer to interpret precise emotions in a concrete context which imbues music with tangibly perceptible sincerity.

All that remains of the character and the play is the situation, the life circumstances, all there rest is mine, my own concerns, as a role in all its creative moments depends on a living person i.e. the actor, and not the dead abstraction of a person, i.e. the role.” - Konstantin Stanislavsky

This course takes the student through the basic principles of theoretical understanding and practical application of Narrative Musicianship to the cognitive process of learning music and performing instrumental (non-worded) music.
