Epistle One: The Beginning of a Choice
Dear Future Me,
I write this letter from a place of confusion, though I pretend to the world that I have everything figured out. My name is Amara, a final-year student with dreams once so clear they felt like destiny. I was supposed to graduate this year, secure a good job, and lift my family out of the quiet struggles they never spoke about.
But lately, something has shifted.
It started with new friends—Zara, Kemi, and Tolu. They are everything I thought I wanted to be: bold, carefree, fearless. They laugh at rules, mock responsibilities, and live each day as if consequences are myths invented to scare the weak.
At first, I resisted. I told myself I was different.
But then I started staying out late. Missing classes became easier. Assignments felt optional. “Life is short,” Zara would say. “Books won’t give you memories.”
And I believed her.
I ignored the voice in my head that sounded a lot like my mother’s. The one that whispered, “Stay focused.”
Now I stand at a crossroads, though I pretend I’ve already chosen.
Maybe I have.
—Florence
