The vote count for last month’s do-over Red Hook Democratic Caucus left political observers stunned.

The same candidates who won the first caucus emerged victorious again—but this time, a newcomer, Zoe Evans, someone who had declared her candidacy scarcely 72 hours earlier, came within six votes of an extraordinary upset. If an influx of Republican-leaning voters hadn’t jumped parties to participate in the caucus, Evans would have emerged victorious, according to leading local Democrats.

This past June, Mark Fuerst, longtime media executive and avid cycler, checked the app he uses to track the miles he bikes. Known in Rhinebeck as the former publisher of the Hudson Valley Pilot, a founder of Rhinebeck Responds, and an active Rotary Club member, Fuerst hadn’t realized the total number of miles he had logged since setting up the app in 2018.
