The Legend of Nyi Roro Kidul
Long ago, in the land of Java, there lived a beautiful princess from the Kingdom of Pajajaran named Dewi Kadita. She was known for her beauty and kind heart. However, the young queen, one of the king’s concubines, was jealous of Dewi Kadita and wanted her gone so her own child could inherit the throne.
With the help of a dark shaman, the queen cursed Dewi Kadita with a horrible skin disease. The once-lovely princess became covered in wounds and sores. The king, heartbroken, was unable to help her. The people began to shun her, and eventually, Dewi Kadita was exiled from the palace.
Wandering in sorrow, she traveled south until she reached the edge of the Indian Ocean. In despair, she threw herself into the sea. Miraculously, as she submerged in the ocean, her disease vanished. She transformed into a powerful and ethereal being of the sea.
From that moment on, she became known as Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea, ruler of the mystical ocean realm. Many believe she has a grand palace beneath the waves and can summon or drown anyone who disturbs her domain.
