Markets Media is all about institutional trading, technology and market structure, where the buy side meets the sell side. Through a digital platform and live events such as Summer Trading Network, Markets Media Week, and the Markets Choice Awards, MM covers the market ecosystem across the equity, fixed income and FX asset classes, spanning institutional investment managers, sell-side banks, proprietary traders, exchanges, alternative trading systems, regulators, incumbent technology providers and emerging fintech concerns.
Mission: Markets Media's editorial mission is to cover the complex interrelationships among key decision makers at hedge funds, exchanges, and pension funds, plus professionals like broker-dealers, money managers, service providers and regulators in an ever-evolving marketplace. As marketplaces have swelled with new entrants and many players have assumed new roles, either as entrepreneurs or with a growing middle market, we work to trace patterns and explain the changes transforming the industry. We aim to demystify the strategies and sequences of events that shape investing and trading via direct contact with the people who make the calls that move markets and determine outcomes. Our direct relationships with key professionals help us create business-critical content that cannot be obtained anywhere else.

She has successfully driven the growth of market data businesses since 2007, in senior management positions at exchange operators and technology providers. As a CEO, and as an individual, she follows two key principles: never stop learning, and help others by sharing your knowledge. The CEO of the Year is Jennifer Nayar of Vela. Eileen K Murray, Bridgewater Associates -- Lifetime Achievement. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com As co-CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund, our winner is responsible back-office and support operations, with oversight of about 750 employees. She describes her childhood, growing up in an NYC housing project, as “low in income, but rich in many other ways.” After graduating from Manhattan College, she entered the world of finance and it has been an upward arc from there. Often, she has been the “first woman” in the roles she has played — after beginning her career at KPMG, Eileen joined Morgan Stanley where she became Chief Operating Officer of the firm’s Institutional Securities Division. She later joined Credit Suisse as Head of Global Technology, Operations, and Product Control, where she became the first woman appointed to Credit Suisse’s Executive Board. At work, she focuses on steady leadership and innovation, and throughout her career, she has championed programs to help women and men balance work and family responsibilities, as well as diversity, workforce training, and career development initiatives. After hours, she has made active community, charitable and professional association involvement a priority, and has devoted enormous amounts of time to the organizations she has supported over the years. The winner for Lifetime Achievement is Eileen K. Murray of Bridgewater Associates. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-a

Susan Estes, OpenDoor Trading -- Disruptor of the Year. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com Disruptor of the Year is for the person who has most shaken up the space they work in. Our winner co-founded an all-to-all, session-based trading platform to fill the liquidity vacuum for off-the-run US Treasuries and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities. A 35-year veteran of capital market structure, she took her firm live in April 2017, and in the first five months, received more than $130 billion in orders and matched multiple billions in trades. The winner has disrupted by introducing a new market structure that transitioned a portion of the market from an incumbent risk-intermediary model, to a riskless-principal model, where buy side matches with buy side and sponsor-dealers settle trades but do not take risk. Our Disruptor of the Year is Susan Estes of OpenDoor Trading LLC. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Susan Cosgrove, DTCC -- Individual Achievement. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com As Managing Director and CFO at a large financial organization, our winner leads the firm’s global finance and treasury teams and oversees the company’s efforts to strengthen its financial processes and capital position. Throughout her 32-year career, she has balanced resiliency and flexibility in managing difficult circumstances that require persistence and resolve, such as during the financial crisis and the Lehman Brother’s liquidation – all while being the best leader she can be, constantly elevating the way she thinks and driving accountability for herself and her team. Her advice to women starting out in finance for when they may feel intimidated: “embrace those moments when you feel uncomfortable. It is here that you grow.” The winner for Individual Achievement is Susan Cosgrove of DTCC. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Joanna Davies, NEX Traiana -- Trailblazer. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com As its name implies, the Trailblazer Award is for someone who has blazed a career trail for women. Our winner has indeed blazed quite a trail. Starting in an entry-level back office job at a brokerage firm at age 18, sans university degree, she learned every role from the ground up and aspired to be a futures broker. She studied, took the necessary exams and proceeded to work as a broker in listed derivatives for nearly 10 years in an extremely male-dominated era. She felt the relationship-heavy listed derivatives business was one that suited her personality, and she developed a client network and lifelong friends that would springboard her career development. Now a 25-year sell-side veteran, she is a managing director at a market infrastructure technology provider, where she focuses on providing a single platform for customers to interface with markets, so they don’t have to develop and manage multiple proprietary connections to participants and intermediaries. The Trailblazer Award winner is Joanna Davies of NEX Traiana. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Thea Williams, T. Rowe Price -- Excellence in Fixed Income Trading. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com Our winner heads global fixed income trading at a buy-side giant. This 31-year market veteran sees several core investment themes that can equally be applied to people management: (1) To invest, whether it is in people or portfolios, where there is the greatest potential. (2) Have a consistent, well-defined approach executed with integrity, focused on achieving long-term goals while leveraging short-term opportunities; and (3), to embrace diversification as diversity within a team to promote increased innovation and improve decision making. The winner for Fixed Income Trader of the Year is Thea Williams of T. Rowe Price. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Cindy Finkelman, FactSet -- CIO of the Year. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com Our Chief Information Officer of the Year drives technology strategy and solution delivery for all internal business processes at a major financial data and information company, where she also oversees quality assurance for the product and the company’s project management office. She demonstrates leadership by sponsoring a forum at her company to help people grow their skills and take personal responsibility for their own development. A number of people at her organization have engaged in this development program and have flourished as a result. The winner for CIO of the Year is Cindy Finkelman of FactSet. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Karen O’Connor, trueEX -- Excellence in Leadership. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com Our winner is President & COO of a swaps execution facility for interest rate swaps and credit derivatives. She has held leadership positions in successful start-up companies. Professionally, she is passionate about joining start-up companies that have the opportunity to be transformative — going where others have not in creating viable businesses that provide solutions to longstanding problems. With each sale of a company, her goal is to give back in a meaningful way, for example by building a teaching lab for inner-city students or endowing a financial investment fund where students can learn the tools of real-time investing. We wish her the best in these altruistic endeavors. The winner for Excellence in Leadership is Karen O’Connor of trueEX. Full information and a list of Winners can be found at http://marketsmedia.com/event/women-finance-awards-luncheon/
Andrea Leung, Deutsche Bank -- Crystal Ladder. Speaking at Markets Media's 2017 Women in Finance Awards luncheon https://marketsmedia.com The Crystal Ladder award is for a woman who has climbed through the ranks to reach senior management. Our winner, an Illinois native, started her Wall Street career in 1994 as vice president in equity derivatives at JP Morgan. In 2002 she moved to Deutsche Bank, where the team of synthetic equity traders expanded from 5 to 80 under her management. She is now managing director of relationship management at Deutsche Bank, where she focuses on sales strategy and cultivating senior management relationships for hedge fund, pension, and investment management clients. She is active in women’s networking in corporate finance and markets, which is the toughest area in the bank to attract and retain women. She has a passion for helping women, and for her job covering clients — she combines the two because she feels that women still struggle to get ahead and initiatives need to come from “top down.”
