My 13-year-old daughter kept sleeping over at her best friend's — then the friend's mom texted me, "She hasn't been here in weeks." My daughter, Jordan, is thirteen. That age when she's not a little kid anymore, but she's also not grown. She still leaves her cereal bowl in the sink like it's going to magically wash itself, but she also rolls her eyes like she's forty and pays taxes. Jordan's been glued to her best friend, Alyssa, since elementary school. I know Alyssa's mom, Tessa, pretty well. We're not "wine night" close, but we've done enough carpools and birthday parties that I trusted her. So when Jordan started asking to sleep over at Alyssa's more often, I didn't think twice. Once a month became every other weekend, and then it turned into a routine—Jordan packing an overnight bag on Friday like she was clocking into a second life. The first month, I did everything "proper." Every time I'd text Tessa, "Jordan's on her way!" and she'd reply with something quick like, "Okay!" or "Got her!" After a while it stopped feeling like a big deal. It felt normal. So I stopped checking in every single time and just did the mom thing at the door: "Be good. Be respectful. Text me if you need me." Jordan would groan, "I will, Mom," like I'd embarrassed her just by breathing. Easy. Normal. Safe. Until last Tuesday. Jordan had just left with her bag when I remembered my birthday was coming up. I figured I'd invite Tessa over—nothing big, just cake and a few people. And since Jordan was spending the night there again, I added a thank-you. "Hey Tessa! My birthday's soon and I'd love to have you over if you're free. Also, thank you again for letting Jordan stay the night—I really appreciate it." Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed. It was Tessa. "Hey… I don't want to freak you out, but Jordan hasn't been here in weeks." My fingers went cold. "What do you mean 'weeks'?"
