⌛ "It takes 20 years to become an overnight success."
—Barry Alexander

Less than six months before her Carnegie Hall debut, pianist Nana Miyoshi (Studio7) examines how classical musicians built careers before Instagram and why today's artists must think like entrepreneurs or risk performing in a vacuum. Featuring insights from Steinway & Sons Artist and Teacher of the Year Cosmo D Buono and industry veteran Barry Alexander.

🤍 If you've been following Nana Miyoshi's blog this past week, you know we've been sharing her day-by-day recap of her recent New York trip—taking you inside the real life of an emerging concert artist. The practices, the performances, the meetings, the moments that shape a career.

Day Four is different.

This entry starts with Nana in the second row of the Metropolitan Opera (yes, second row—close enough to hear the conductor humming), watching Donizetti with Sandra Oh on stage, surrounded by mentors planning her future. Then a web designer flies in from LA for a surprise meeting where ideas are flying and everything feels like it's falling perfectly into place.

And then her phone lights up during dinner with news from Tokyo.

What happens next—what Nana writes about what happened next—is why we started sharing these blog posts in the first place. This isn't just about technique and repertoire and concert halls. It's about what young artists carry with them from childhood. About who was there listening when they were four years old. About how the highest highs and the deepest losses can inhabit the same day, and why that matters for everyone who loves classical music, teaches it, performs it, or raises someone who does.

We could tell you more, but honestly? Nana's words will do what ours can't. This one stays with you.

ABF extends our heartfelt thanks to the Columbus Citizens Foundation and Franco Zeffirelli Foundation for asking for our participation last Friday to celebrate Franco Zeffirelli, and the productions he did for The Metropolitan Opera from 1964—1998.
