The man in the photograph is the legendary German fighter ace known as the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen. During the First World War, Richthofen became the most famous pilot of the conflict, credited with 80 aerial victories. Flying his distinctive bright-red aircraft, he became a symbol of Germany’s air war and a figure respected even by his enemies. His reputation for skill, discipline, and chivalry in combat made him one of the most celebrated aviators in military history.
On April 21, 1918, Richthofen was killed while pursuing a British aircraft over the Somme Valley in France. Although debate continued for decades over exactly who fired the fatal shot, his death was immediately recognized as the loss of an extraordinary opponent. Rather than treating him as a hated enemy, Australian troops of the British Empire recovered his body and arranged a full military funeral. Six Australian airmen served as pallbearers, and wreaths were placed on his grave as a mark of respect.
One of the wreaths bore the inscription, “To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe.” The gesture reflected a fading tradition of military honor that was still present among many early aviators of the First World War. Newspapers around the world reported on the funeral, turning Richthofen into an international legend. More than a century later, the Red Baron remains one of the most recognizable figures of World War I, remembered not only for his remarkable combat record but also for the extraordinary respect shown to him by the very men he had fought against.
