This powerful photograph captures Joseph Francis Ambrose at 86 years old during the November 13, 1982, dedication parade for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.. Known affectionately in his later years as "Doughboy Joe," Ambrose attended the event wearing his original World War I uniform, complete with his combat helmet and field equipment.
The folded American flag he cradles in his arms did not belong to his own service, but rather was the burial flag that had covered the casket of his third son, Clement A. Ambrose.
Ambrose was drafted into the United States Army in 1917, serving with Company I, 140th Infantry, 35th Division until 1919, where he saw action in major battlefield offensives like St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne.
Decades after his own deployment, his son Clement followed in his military footsteps. Tragically, Clement, a sergeant in the 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division, was killed in action during the Korean War on February 14, 1951, at the age of 22. Carrying this flag became a profound, personal ritual for the elder Ambrose to physically link the generational sacrifices of American soldiers across different eras.
Ambrose frequently wore his vintage uniform to Veterans Day parades and VFW conventions, famously confessing that he sometimes had to go on a crash diet just to squeeze back into the World War I-era wool. He marched specifically to honor the veterans of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, conflicts he feared the American public was actively trying to forget.
Until his death in 1988 at the age of 91, his enduring public presence served as a powerful historical reminder that the profound grief of a military family and the respect for those who risk everything transcend the politics and outcomes of any single war.
