It took NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft nearly 9.5 years to travel more than 3 billion miles (about 4.8 billion kilometers) before it reached Pluto in July 2015. Launched in January 2006, the mission completed humanity’s first close flyby of Pluto, transforming what we knew about this mysterious dwarf planet forever.
The icy mountains seen on Pluto rise as high as some of Earth's major mountain ranges, yet they are made largely of water ice, which is as hard as solid rock in Pluto's extreme cold of around -229°C (-380°F). Before New Horizons arrived, scientists had only blurry images of Pluto. The mission revealed a surprisingly complex world filled with towering mountains, vast frozen plains, glaciers, deep valleys, possible ice volcanoes, and evidence that Pluto may still be geologically active today.
One of Pluto's most famous regions is Sputnik Planitia, the giant heart-shaped basin covered with nitrogen ice that slowly flows like a glacier. Scientists believe this landscape is constantly evolving, proving that even a tiny world at the edge of our Solar System can remain incredibly dynamic.
What makes this image even more extraordinary is that the data traveled for more than 4.5 hours at the speed of light before reaching Earth. Every pixel in this photograph crossed billions of kilometers through empty space, delivering humanity's first close-up glimpse of one of the most distant worlds ever explored.
New Horizons didn't stop after Pluto. In 2019, it flew past the ancient Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth, helping scientists understand how planets formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The spacecraft is still traveling deeper into the outer Solar System, continuing one of NASA's greatest exploration missions.
