Darius B. Moon house. In 1894, Moon designed this Queen Anne house, then located at 112 Logan Street, for his own residence. He lived there until his retirement in 1923, at which time he converted the second floor into an apartment. Moon lived in the apartment, while his daughter Princess and her husband, Howard Adams, occupied the downstairs apartment. Moon lived in the house until his death in 1934, and his daughter lived there through the mld-1950s.

In the 1970s there was a fire on the second floor, and the house was abandoned. In 1975, a local non-profit, Save the Moon House, Inc., purchased the house and in 1978 moved it to its present location. The house was sold to a private owner, and rehabilitated by 1979.

I spoke to the man whose mother once lived in this house. His family were Florida pioneers. He told me she had a beautiful garden and lots of chickens. 🌿

🍃The origin of the term “Florida Cracker” is somewhat in dispute. Some say it refers to the cracking sound made by the whips used by early white settlers to herd their cattle.

Others say the term comes from the use of cracked corn in making moonshine, a common activity on the Florida frontier. Either way, the term generally describes a class of early Florida pioneers, mainly small farmers and cattle ranchers.

Cracker cowboys are sometimes called cow hunters, because they typically allowed their cows to wander over the open range to obtain the best grass wherever it could be found rather than confining them in enclosed pastures.

When it was time for branding or driving the cattle to market, the cracker cowboys would search the woods and round up all the cows with the aid of whips and cattle dogs.

Florida Crackers are also distinguishable by the architecture of their frontier Florida homes, their musical traditions, and foodways.

200-year-old wooden bridge in Dagestan, Russia, built without the use of a single nails.

Located in one of the mountainous regions of the North Caucasus, this bridge is said to have been constructed entirely without the use of nails, relying instead on interlocking wooden joints, pegs, and traditional joinery techniques passed down through generations.

Such bridges were often built by local artisans using only wood sourced from nearby forests. The strength and durability of these structures come from meticulous design—where each piece is cut to fit perfectly, allowing the natural tension and weight of the components to hold the bridge together. Despite the lack of metal fasteners, these bridges were built to last, enduring harsh weather and the passage of time.

At one point, this old Florida house belonged to a doctor who served a rural community in Putnam County.

The community faded away, and eventually all the buildings disappeared, including this one which was demolished a few months after I took this photo.

One of the world‘s greatest coastal redwood trees, nicknamed “Spartan”. This massive tree stands over 309 ft. tall; over 27 ft. In diameter (at ave. breast height); total volume of the main trunk: around 45,000 cu. ft. It’s not only big but also very ancient; this tree could be as old as 3000 years of age!
