Kurt Kromm, 60, had worked as an electrical engineer at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant for 11 years.

During a night shift around 3:30 a.m., his blood sugar dropped, so he went to a vending machine to buy a $1.95 cookie.

The first machine malfunctioned, so he used another one, paid for the cookie, took it, and returned to work.

About a week later, Kurt was unexpectedly called into the office. He was accused of taking the cookie without paying, terminated immediately, and escorted out of the plant.

Shocked by the accusation, Kurt pointed out that he had spent more than $1,200 at the plant cafeteria the previous year.

"Why would I steal a $2 cookie?" he asked.

He appealed the decision. Ford asked him to provide bank records while the company investigated the incident.

After checking with the vending machine operator, Ford confirmed that the payment had gone through and admitted the mistake.

The company offered Kurt his job back with full back pay and restored benefits.

But he declined.

By then, the experienced engineer had already found a better-paying job closer to home. More importantly, after what had happened, he no longer trusted the company he had served for 11 years.

My take? Mistakes can happen in any company. But when someone's reputation is damaged before the facts are verified, an apology and back pay don't always restore what was lost. Trust, once broken, is often the hardest thing to earn back.

Lise Meitner: The Jewish genius erased from Nobel history 💔

Born in 1878 in Vienna, Austria, to a Jewish family, Lise Meitner defied every barrier of her era to become one of the 20th century’s greatest physicists.

Nominated for the Nobel Prize 49 times by Albert Einstein, Max Planck, and Niels Bohr — yet she received zero. The discovery that changed the world — nuclear fission — was hers. But her name was erased.

Why was a genius denied Nobel recognition?

💥 1938: Escaping N**i Germany
With only 10 marks in her pocket, Meitner fled Berlin. On a snowy path in Sweden, she and her nephew Otto Frisch sketched equations with a stick. They proved uranium nuclei could split, releasing immense energy.
She named it “fission.” Published in Nature, Feb 11, 1939.

🤫 Erased from history
The 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Otto Hahn alone — her research partner of 30 years. Meitner’s name was missing. She was a woman. She was a Jewish exile.

☢️ Humanity over glory
When the U.S. invited her to join the Manhattan Project, she refused: “I will have nothing to do with a bomb!”
She held that moral line for life, even though her discovery enabled nuclear weapons.

✨ Justice, delayed
In 1997, 29 years after her death, element 109 was named Meitnerium — an honor Hahn never received.

No husband. No children. No Nobel. No glory in her lifetime.
Only this epitaph in England: “Lise Meitner — a physicist who never lost her humanity.”
