Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was asked by whether Iran would release two wrongfully detained Americans as a gesture of goodwill to the United States. One of them, journalist Reza Valizadeh, is being held in Tehran’s Evin prison. “Do you think by setting them free, we can rebuild trust?” Pezeshkian asked, arguing that Iran had previously released prisoners as part of an agreement with the U.S. that he said Washington did not fulfill. “We tested it, but it didn’t work,” he said. “The United States gets what it wants and then doesn’t honor its commitment.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would now allow U.N. nuclear inspectors into the country. In an interview with Pezeshkian on Friday, pointed out that inspectors from the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency were not given full access when they tried before. "Will your country allow in weapons inspectors now?" Brennan asked again. "That is absolutely correct," he responded again, adding, "If they wish to come in and have inspections, we can reach accords and agreements vis-à-vis that specific topic within the negotiations."

President Trump says he has rejected Iran’s latest proposal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising questions about whether diplomacy can continue or if the U.S. will resume strikes. The uncertainty comes just weeks before the midterm elections, as Trump also faces concerns over the economy and rising prices, along with an ongoing confrontation with the White House press corps.

Taiwan’s representative to the U.S. Alexander Yui said Sunday that he sees no change in Washington’s position toward Taiwan following President Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week. “The United States made it very clear that [there was] no change in position towards Taiwan, and I think they made it clear during and before and after the visit,” Yui said.

CBS News’ Senior Political and White House Correspondent Ed O’Keefe says the Republicans’ push to redistrict the Texas congressional maps “was built on the premise that the Latino support would hold” and now poses a risk to the party in the midterms. “If Republicans fail to win at least three of those five, this will have been a disastrous, expensive waste of time, money and political focus,” he says.

President Trump is motivating voters from both parties in the 2026 midterms, a new CBS News Battleground Tracker poll finds, as Democrats hold an edge in the fight for the House. The model currently puts Democrats at 228 seats, above the 218 needed for a majority. “There's a range around that. The Democrats could go higher. Republicans still have a chance to hold on in our model. So, this is not a done deal,” CBS News' Executive Director of Elections and Surveys Anthony Salvanto explains.

“He’s a scholar. He’s an academic. He’s not a spy”: Sylvia Zin has not seen or heard from her husband, Min Zin, an American citizen, in more than 100 days, after he was detained in China while visiting in June for an academic conference. Min Zin’s work focused on his home country of Myanmar, where China supports a military dictatorship. A government spokesman said the academic was suspected of espionage. Sylvia Zin told The Nation moderator Margaret Brennan that she is hopeful President Trump will discuss her husband’s case when he meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says before he can have a direct meeting with President Trump, "We need to determine now what exactly we want to reach an understanding on." "If we don’t abide by what we have written down as necessary, can we really resolve it through dialogue? We wrote it down and signed it. It’s clear," Pezeshkian told . “The first thing that needs to happen is that the distrust created by this war has to be overcome. We need to abide by what we have written down. The United States needs to show that it does not intend to overthrow our government or our administration. Put yourself in our position. Imagine someone came and martyred your supreme leader."

What could stand in the way of Democrats or Republicans winning the House in November? Democrats face the challenge of giving voters a reason to vote for them, rather than primarily to oppose President Trump, while Republicans need to extend turnout motivation “beyond the MAGA base.” Voters’ opposition to the administration’s tariffs and the Iran conflict also remains a “hurdle” for Republicans, CBS News' Anthony Salvanto says.
