We're thrilled to kick off our Pride Month celebration by focusing the #DPSSpotlight on playwright Matthew Lopez.

Matthew Lopez is an award-winning American playwright and screenwriter whose plays frequently examine American class structures, race, sexual identity, and their relationships with American society at large.

His play THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE, about a young, broke Elvis impersonator who finds that he has a whole lot to learn about show business—and himself when the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, premiered at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and ran Off-Broadway at MCC Theater in a production that received multiple Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle nominations, including Best Play.

His newest two part play THE INHERITANCE, set in New York three decades after the height of the AIDS epidemic, wrestles with what it means to be a gay man today. The play premiered at the Young Vic Theatre and transferred to London's West End winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play. The play transferred to Broadway, and sadly closed early due to the COVID-19 Broadway shutdown. DPS will proudly publish THE INHERITANCE later this year.

🌸 I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special. 🌸

#Throwback to this gem from the #DPSBackCatalogue, the original, all-female play on which the beloved film is based. Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, and filled with humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when the the local social leader's spunky daughter, Shelby, risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. 🟥⬛🖼

Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.

PASSAGE
by Christopher Chen

A fantasia inspired by E.M. Forster’s A Passage to India.

PASSAGE is set in the fictional Country X, which is a neocolonial client of Country Y. B, a local doctor, and F, an expat teacher, begin to forge a friendship that is challenged after a fateful trip to a local attraction. A meditation on how power imbalances affect personal and interpersonal dynamics across a spectrum of situations, the play allows a director wide latitude in casting the roles by race, ethnicity, and gender, with different casting choices highlighting different societal structures.

ANGRY, RAUCOUS, AND SHAMELESSLY GORGEOUS
by Pearl Cleage

A lifetime ago, actress Anna Campbell and director Betty Samson ignited a major theatrical controversy with a performance of monologues from August Wilson’s Fences that came to be known forever as Naked Wilson. After decades of self-imposed exile in Amsterdam to escape the critics, they receive an invitation to perform the show at a women’s theatre festival promising to be “angry, raucous, and shamelessly gorgeous.” Uncertain of what kind of reception she will get, and unmoved by Betty’s reassurances, Anna’s insecurity grows when she meets Pete Watson, the ambitious young performer who has been chosen to replace Anna in the role but whose theatrical experience is so far limited to the adult entertainment industry. Searching for common ground, Anna and Pete must confront their ideas about themselves and each other as they reconcile two vastly different worldviews. With humor and grace, Pearl Cleage finds a meeting place where both women can not only find each other, but make peace with a few lingering ghosts just in time for opening night.

This month, we focus the #DPSSpotlight on playwright Jaclyn Backhaus. 📝✨

Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Backhaus is a playwright, cofounder of Fresh Ground Pepper, and new member of The Kilroys. She has received commissions from Playwrights Horizons and Ars Nova and is the 2016 Tow Foundation Playwright-in-Residence at Clubbed Thumb.

Her play MEN ON BOATS, about a group of explorers charting the course of the Colorado River and featuring an all-female cast, was a NYT Critics’ Pick. In YOU ON THE MOORS NOW she takes everything you’ve learned about love from the pages of Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Little Women and turns it upside down in this grand theatrical battle royale. Her newest play to the DPS catalogue, INDIA PALE ALE is available to purchase as a manuscript and will be published later this year.

We are very excited to announce our Spring 2020 Squeaky Bicycle Reading Lab! We begin our tenth season with an Equity Staged Reading of a new play that gets to the heart of an underrepresented side of our 2020 season’s focus: the value of reproductive rights. Squeaky Bicycle Presents an Equity Staged Reading of: Almost Pregnant by Lisa Grunberger Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 7:00pm 13th Street Repertory Theatre 50 West 13th Street Between Fifth & Sixth Avenues Becca is a 40 something woman who must creatively adapt to her condition of infertility. She is joined by her alter egos, Estrogen and Lucky, as she creatively reimagines her identity and how she adapts to her situation in a very Jewish, very human way. The play is full of tragic and funny stories about motherhood, fate, the transmission of identity, Nature vs. Nurture, and God. Almost Pregnant gives you an unexpurgated insider's view of the art and science of what's been called "sex without reproduction and reproduction without sex.” Get ready for a wildly imaginative journey through the Alice in Wonderland world-turned-upside-down of infertility as Becca talks with Gloria Steinem and Andy Warhol about her desire to become a mother.
