Based on the book by Claudia Rankine, and adapted for the stage by #DPSPlaywright Stephen Sachs, CITIZEN: AN AMERICAN LYRIC is a searing, poetic riff on race in America, fusing prose, poetry, movement, music, and the visual image.

Snapshots, vignettes, on the acts of everyday racism. Some of these encounters are slights, seeming slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams, online, on TV—everywhere, all the time. Those did-that-really-just-happen-did-they-really-just-say-that slurs that happen every day and enrage in the moment and later steep poisonously in the mind. And, of course, those larger incidents that become national or international firestorms.

Winner of the 2015 Tony Award™ for Best Play, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, based on the novel by Mark Haddon and adapted by #DPSPlaywright Simon Stephens, follows 15-year-old Christopher who has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. In South Korea, a mother prepares a bowl of soup to keep her son from leaving home. In America, a son cooks a meal for his dying father to say everything that words can’t. In this poignant and lyrical play, the making of a perfect meal is an expression more precise than language, and the medium through which life gradually reveals itself. 🍲🍆

WIVES
by Jaclyn Backhaus

From the brawny castles of 16th century France, to the rugged plains of 1960s Idaho, to the strapping palaces of 1920s India, all hail the remarkable stories of the Great Men—as told by their whiny, witchy, vapid, vengeful, jealous wives. In this kaleidoscopic, time-hopping, comic ensemble piece, Jaclyn Backhaus pushes past patriarchal cliché to reach an ecstatic breakthrough, untethering stories and history—and language itself—from the visions made by men. A play about women taking control of their narratives with the help of each other, their feeling, and a giant fish.

THE PAIN OF MY BELLIGERENCE
by Halley Feiffer

Cat, a whip-smart journalist on the path to greatness, is on a first date with Guy at the restaurant he owns with his wife. Despite the minor detail of his marital status, Cat is swept up by his lethal charms, marking the beginning of a relationship that will irrevocably change her life. With each passing year, Cat’s success, social circle, and independence are gradually eaten away by her parasitic lover and her ongoing battle with Lyme disease, all against the backdrop of a fracturing post-2016 America. At once hilarious and harrowing, THE PAIN OF MY BELLIGERENCE fearlessly examines how women find themselves participating in a culture that was never meant to serve them, and whether a more hopeful future is possible.

This month, we focus the #DPSSpotlight on playwright Katori Hall. 📝✨

Katori Hall is an award-winning playwright and performer hailing from Memphis, Tennessee.

Hall is best known for her play THE MOUNTAINTOP, a gripping reimagination of events the night before the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The play premiered in London to critical acclaim and won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in March 2010, making Hall the first black woman to achieve this accolade. The play opened soon after on Broadway starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.

She was among the playwrights chosen for the Signature Theatre Company new Residency Five initiative which makes the writers resident playwrights with the company and guarantees each of them three full world-premiere productions over a five year residency. Her play HURT VILLAGE, about the residents of the titular housing project in Memphis facing demolition in order to clear space for new condominiums, premiered at the Signature in 2012.

In addition to her Olivier Awards, Hall has been awarded a Susan Smith Blackburn Award for HURT VILLAGE, a Playwrights of New York (PONY) Fellowship from our friends at The Lark, the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, and many others.

We are very excited to announce our Spring 2020 Squeaky Bicycle Reading Lab! We begin our tenth season with an Equity Staged Reading of a new play that gets to the heart of an underrepresented side of our 2020 season’s focus: the value of reproductive rights. Squeaky Bicycle Presents an Equity Staged Reading of: Almost Pregnant by Lisa Grunberger Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 7:00pm 13th Street Repertory Theatre 50 West 13th Street Between Fifth & Sixth Avenues Becca is a 40 something woman who must creatively adapt to her condition of infertility. She is joined by her alter egos, Estrogen and Lucky, as she creatively reimagines her identity and how she adapts to her situation in a very Jewish, very human way. The play is full of tragic and funny stories about motherhood, fate, the transmission of identity, Nature vs. Nurture, and God. Almost Pregnant gives you an unexpurgated insider's view of the art and science of what's been called "sex without reproduction and reproduction without sex.” Get ready for a wildly imaginative journey through the Alice in Wonderland world-turned-upside-down of infertility as Becca talks with Gloria Steinem and Andy Warhol about her desire to become a mother.
