Here's what I found in my inbox this fine Monday morning:

Three completed and edited manuscripts from Top Three Book Workshop alums for my review. Not just any manuscripts--GOOD manuscripts. Manuscripts that will soon be must-read books. Two, I expected. One was a surprise.

This fall, five of my students have book releases. Four more will turn in manuscripts to their publishers. A few more are on track to finish their second drafts. Others will finish their first draft. A couple of them will start their agent submission process.

More important than these numbers: the quality of their work. My students care about their reader. In Workshop, they learned how to craft a truly transformational book, and then they do just that.

Top Three Book Workshop starts September 13th. I accept 15 students and I have five open slots. I'd love to see YOUR manuscript in my inbox later this year. See comments for links.

Coming to you live from a cabin in Lake Superior, here's my Happy Book Birthday video for Lisa Hufford. Her book, WORK YOUR WAY (HarperCollins) is out today.

Lisa came into Top Three Book Workshop with a goal to write a truly transformational book and she knocked it out of the park. She pushed herself to write better stories, to go beyond the stellar practical advice she is known for, and deliver on her promise to readers. I'm so proud of you, Lisa. Congratulations on this major accomplishment!

It's Kasey Compton's Book Birthday! Her game-changer of a book, FIX THIS NEXT FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS is available today!

Kasey is a model author--she dedicated herself to writing a truly transformational, must-read book. And she delivered. You have not read a business book like this. Her voice is truly unique and her practical approach to running a successful health care practice is powerful and doable.

Happy Book Birthday, Kasey!

I get all choked up.

Witnessing my Top Three Book Workshop authors learn how to write a truly transformational book, gain confidence and knowledge, and become the type of author they never thought possible brings me so much joy.

Here's a video highlighting the experiences of some of my Winter 2021 alums.

Remember, if you sign up for the Fall 2021 class, you'll get my Test Drive Your Content Course for free, as well as a recording of my StoryFinder Mastercraft class, where I teach you how to interview people to get great stories for your book. Heads up authors and aspiring authors…

If you have considered joining Top Three Book Workshop, now is the time to sign up. I'm planning two big changes in 2022, and my Fall 2021 session will be the last time I offer the workshop at the current price.

My Top Three Book Workshop students and alums are having an amazing year so far, hard evidence that dedication to craft pays dividends. Here’s just a sample of their accomplishments:

Susanne Mariga, CPA not only received an excellent review from Kirkus, the toughest trade reviewer on the planet, Publishers Weekly also highlighted her book an Editor’s Pick.

Mike Ciavolino, and his book and podcast were featured in USA Today—and it doesn’t even have a release date yet.

Another alum is weighing which of the three notable agents pounding at her door she’ll choose to work with for her book. (I’ll leave her name out until she decides.)

So I can dedicate time to support my thriving alum community, I’ve decided to do two workshops next year, not three. In 2022 I will accept 30 new students in two workshops. After four years and many no-charge add-ons to the workshop, it's also time for a price increase, which will take effect in 2022.

As my students and the alums can testify, the author collective that has formed around the workshop is as valuable as the training they receive. We support, uplift, and encourage each other on this often-lonely journey to authorship. I give alums lifetime access to trainings and class, and even have alum-centric events to address their growing needs as published authors.

If you’d like to take the workshop and reap lifetime benefits in our author community at the current rate, I do have eleven open slots for fall.

And, if you pay in full by the end of June, you’ll get three one-on-ones with me—one in June, one in July, and one in August—to help you get a head start on your book over the summer.

You will also be given access to my video series Test Drive Your Content and my Mastercraft class, Story Finder: Interview and Craft Impactful Stories. Both of these mini courses will help you hit the ground running when class starts on September 13th.

The world deserves better books. I would love to show you how to write your must-read, a book that becomes a reader’s top three. Schedule a call with me to see if the workshop is the right fit.

Note: This pic is from one of our in-person Developmental Editing Retreats, pre-pandemic. These retreats are for alums only, one of the benefits of joining the workshop. And we're back with in-person retreats this year!

When an author is driven by a mission to change the world, their book is so much more than a collection of wisdom; it's a window into their heart and soul.

Today is a proud day for me. It's Susanne Mariga's Book Birthday. PROFIT FIRST FOR MINORITY BUSINESS ENTERPRISES is out in the world!

In this video, I share some pull quotes from one of her stellar trade reviews. And if you need this book or you know someone who needs this book, the link to purchase is in the comments.

Happy Book Birthday, Susanne!

Mastercraft Class: Chapter One – AJ Harper

Many authors are confused about the necessary elements and sequencing of a compelling first chapter. In my next pop-up class, I'll break it all down for you.

Mastercraft: Chapter one
Friday, May 7
12pm-4pm Eastern
(Yes, we will record the class)

Mastercraft Class: Chapter One Chapter One. The make-or-break introduction to your reader. This is one of the hardest parts of your book you’ll ever write. If you don’t immediately engage with your reader, if you don’t connect with their starting point, chances are they’ll put your book down...

Friends, it's almost the first Monday of the month, which means time for my book writing workshop's spin on an open mic night smashed with the Moth Story Hour: Monday Night Readings.

At 7pm ET, May 3rd, Indrani Goradia, Susanne Mariga, and Olivia Mitchell will share selected stories from their upcoming books. We have such a diverse group of authors, such different book topics, but one thing is the same: They all know how story unites us. Story teaches us. Stories can enlighten us in ways that sharing data or research just can't.

Plus, it's entertaining as heck.

You won't need to register, just click the link (in comments) on Monday night, May 3rd at 7pm ET and you're in. You'll be glad you came.

(If you use dial-up on Zoom, the ID is 919 7982 6442 and the password 405187)

Hope to see you there!

Sometimes, my authors knock the wind out of me.

Yesterday, in our last class of the Winter session of Top Three Book Workshop, the brilliant Susie deVille posted this message in the chat and it left me breathless. She gave me permission to share it publicly. (And no, "brilliant" is not hyperbole. Her book is on par with THE ARTIST'S WAY, but for entrepreneurs and business owners.)

Her comment reminded why I am called do this work. I frequently say, "I want better books in the world. Let's write better books!" But what really drives me is helping authors realize their vision, step into their own, and write the best damn book their readers have ever cracked open. Because you see, great ideas and life-changing concepts get lost in mediocre books. And mediocre books are the result of bad advice, "book-in-weekend" templates and frameworks, and frankly, not having anyone to give you honest feedback. More than that, mediocre books are the result of NOT putting the reader first in every aspect of getting your book to market.

It is my great privilege to work with authors like Susie. I am keeping this screenshot forever.

Hey, friends! This year, I launched Top Three Book Workshop, a comprehensive live course for authors who want to write a book that truly changes lives--including their own. I love this work so much, and I love my students more than I can express. Here's Tina Martin Forsyth sharing her experience. Top Three Book Workshop starts again again the week of January 22nd. I've added new classes about editing, and building two special 90-minute classes with Mike Michalowicz on marketing, and building a business around your book. I've also added weekly one-on-one sessions with me, for the duration of the course. The class is limited to 25, and I have 16 slots available. I'll be sharing more about the class over the coming weeks, but if you secure your slot before December 15th, you'll get two additional one-on-one sessions with me before class starts. Everything you need to know about the class can be found here: https://ajharper.com/top-three-book-workshop/ On that page, you can also schedule a call with me to learn more, and determine if the workshop would be a good fit for you. As I tell my students, onward! -AJ Harper
