Conceived by William G. Beckford, FONTHILL PRESS exists to publish a handful of worthy books by authors living and dead. We are a small full service-publishing house, arranging cover and book design, printing, marketing, fulfillment and distribution in traditional and electronic formats. In this way, for a few extraordinary books, FONTHILL PRESS supplants a small corner of the domain occupied by contemporary publishers, whose vision has become evermore focused on books of dubious literary merit and passing regard – all for the sake of profits and quick turnover. Media conglomerates, their affiliates and adjuncts have replaced the love of books with an attention to spreadsheets. This decades-long hijacking of books is coming to an end. Books shall endure. Just as pens and stationary have flourished since the proliferation of personal computers, belying all former predictions of their pending obsolescence, so too shall printed books abide and endure – in tandem with their digitalized contents. FONTHILL PRESS views the future through the prism of the past. Our roots lie between Guttenberg and the early Victorian Age when significant literature was published and disseminated either by small press or else personally by the authors. Inspired by our ancestral namesake, FONTHILL exists to publish books of high literary merit and/or historic significance – books that are relevant today and capable of reaching posterity and enduring to the end of the 21st century and beyond; thus in a sense, the dual mission of FONTHILL PRESS is dissemination and preservation.
