The “Why” and “When”
We click the shutter to freeze a feeling, not just a subject. The camera is simply the tool, but the reason we pick it up is to make a tangible record of an internal experience. It’s the urgent need to share a moment that feels too important, too moving, or too true to simply pass by unrecorded.
When We Click (The Decisive Moment): The precise “when” is driven by a sudden, often brief, alignment of internal emotion and external reality. The moment wasn’t just when his hands were together; it was when HIS genuine feeling of respect was visible in his posture and expression. My heart recognized that emotion and signaled my finger to act.
A photo becomes valuable not because it shows a famous musician (the subject), but because it captures a gesture (the action) driven by a feeling (humility) which allowed my heart to recognize and drove me to the capture of that feeling and, this applies to everything. A flower or a landscape becomes Art when the photographer’s heart is there, finding and expressing a feeling—be it tranquility, wonder, melancholy, or joy—within the scene.

Today, we mourn the loss of a true legend and NEA Jazz Master, Jack DeJonhette ( August 9, 1942- October 26, 2025) . I had the profound honor of working alongside him many times. It is with deep sentiment that I post these photos, which bring back truly unforgettable moments we shared.
