STOP HER! EVERYONE TURNED INSTANTLY—
The golden hallway froze. Phones came up, eyes wide. In the center, the young woman’s emerald necklace blazed under the chandeliers. She barely breathed.
The older woman stormed forward, her dress glittering with diamonds. Gripping the young woman’s shoulders, she spat:
“Where did you get that?”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Fingers pointed. Whispers sharpened.
The young woman’s hand trembled. Her eyes dropped—not in guilt, but searching. Fingertips brushed the necklace’s back. Her voice trembled, so soft only the closest could hear:
“It belonged to my parents.”
A scoff. The older woman snapped open a velvet box—inside, another emerald. Nearly identical.
“That’s impossible,” the young woman choked, hand flying to her throat. This time, she felt something hidden—a minute engraving under her thumb. Her gaze shot up, locking with the older woman’s.
Silence thickened. The older woman’s practiced smirk faded as she leaned closer, hunting for details. Her eyes widened. She saw it—the secret inscription, the one mark that could not be duplicated.
Sudden horror washed over her face. The crowd quieted, breathless as her confidence slipped away.
“This can’t be—” she started to say, but the words stuck as realization dawned, chilling and absolute. The necklace wasn’t a stolen treasure. It was proof—of blood, of birthright, of everything she tried to hide. The past refused to stay buried. The legend was alive, standing right in front of her.
The young woman’s lips parted, her own voice rising finally, “You know exactly what this means, don’t you—”
