Since we just talked about it in our latest archive episode, we figured it was the perfect time to pay tribute to the much-missed “Mondomix”. This November 2008 edition of the prestigious French magazine placed special focus on Brazilian music. The issue carried a cover story on Milton Nascimento, who has since retired from the stage, but also the very first mention - in print media - of the Caipirinha Appreciation Society show! We have since been featured in many a publication, but this was a most satisfying first. 🥰
Here’s a free translation of that excerpt:
THE BRAZILIAN UNDERGROUND
Hosted by two Brazilian radio journalists, Caipirinha Appreciation Society (CAS) has been exploring the hidden corners of Brazilian music for several years. “Brazilian music beyond clichés, it’s here!” — that’s the motto of this show dedicated to the overlooked artists of Brazil’s scene, past and present.
Created around 2000 by MdC Suingue, a Brazilian journalist exiled in London, CAS aimed to reveal a part of Brazilian music largely ignored by the majors. Originally produced for University of London radio, the show became bi-national in 2006 with the arrival of Kika Serra in Rio. Every week, these two passionate hosts deliver two hours of samba, bossa nova, psychedelic rock, and other styles — often from totally obscure but always quality groups.
