A survey by Tokyo-based firm Shikigaku, revealing that nearly 49% of Japanese workers aged 20–39 report the presence of "hatarakanai ojisan" (older employees who do little to no work) in their companies.
These workers, often in symbolic, low-responsibility roles due to Japan’s seniority-based employment system, are placed in near-retirement positions rather than being laid off.
This practice frustrates over 59% of younger employees, who feel overburdened, highlighting the need for a shift toward merit-based roles and improved workplace balance.
