Bottle in the shape of a feline. Place of origin: Wari (Peru), c. A.D. 600–900. Collection: The Met.⁣

This Wari bottle seamlessly merges the body of an anthropomorphized feline with that of a flask-like vessel. Combining in-the-round, low-relief, and painted elements, this ceramic is both visually and technically intricate. The depth of its earthy tones and its balance of volumes brilliantly illustrate the ability of Wari artists to fuse Andean mastery of color and sculpture in the art of pottery.⁣

Neolithic “Red Hair Goddess” figurine, made of terracotta around 6000–5500 BC and associated with the Starčevo culture; excavated at Donja Branjevina in northern Serbia, now in the collection of the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade.⁣

This terracotta figure presents a standing female form with prominent gluteal proportions and emphasized breasts. It is associated with the concept of a female progenitor or great mother in early matriarchal societies. At 38 cm in height, it is among the largest prehistoric figurines recorded in Serbia.⁣

The Starčevo culture flourished in the Balkans during the early Neolithic, approximately between 6000 and 5500 BC. It was part of the Starčevo–Kőrös–Criș cultural complex and may have preceded the well-known Vinča culture. These communities introduced agriculture and domesticated animals to the region, laying the foundations for subsequent advances in settlement and social organization.⁣

Gilded Medallion with Dragon and Amethyst Spheres. China, Qing dynasty, 1736–1795 AD. Credit: MAK Sammlung Online.⁣

This gilded medallion, adorned with a finely detailed dragon, dates to the Qing dynasty (1736–1795). The central figure, a five-clawed dragon, is depicted coiling amid swirling clouds, a symbol of imperial power and authority. Four amethyst spheres encircle the dragon, their lustrous purple hue contrasting with the radiant gold surface. ⁣

The meticulous relief work and application of gold indicate the piece's probable association with the imperial family or high-ranking officials. Dragons with five claws were specifically reserved for the emperor during the Qing dynasty, signifying the ruler's connection to divine forces and cosmic order.⁣

The Symbolism of the Dragon in Chinese Culture⁣

Dragons have been a powerful symbol in Chinese culture for millennia, representing strength, protection, and control over water, rain, and floods. Unlike the destructive dragons of Western myth, Chinese dragons are seen as benevolent creatures that bring good fortune. In particular, the imperial dragon, often depicted with five claws, symbolized the emperor's supreme authority over the natural and human worlds. During the Qing dynasty, these representations became more intricate, as they were used to reinforce the emperor's divine mandate and celestial harmony.⁣
