Supreme Court Says Constitution Does Not Bar Partisan Gerrymandering

Justice Roberts reading the minds of dead people to justify rigging the political system: “The drafters of the Constitution, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority, understood that politics would play a role in drawing election districts when they gave the task to state legislatures.”

The court has ruled that racial gerrymanders can violate the Constitution, but it has struggled with voting maps warped by politics

Fifty Years After Stonewall, Many States Still Lack LGBTQ Protections

‪“Pride has long occasioned debates about the extent to which queers should be celebrating or still rioting ... But with the advent of marriage equality, that divide has become a chasm.”

Pride is a national celebration of how far the fight for queer rights has come, but in most of the U.S., there is still a long way to go.

‘Gay Panic’ Defenses Are Banned in N.Y. Murder Cases

In most cases, the law recognizes "panicking" over someone's sexual orientation or gender identity as a mitigating factor in cases of assault or murder.

The state measure stops defendants from citing a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity to justify their crime.

Does the Civil Rights Act Protect Gay Employees? The Court Will Decide.

In this blockbuster case, the conservative Justices will decide whether it’s illegal to fire someone for being queer. Will it be ideology or the letter of the law that triumphs?

My latest for The American Prospect

And the conservative justices will have to choose between their self-proclaimed allegiance to what a law says and their social biases.

The House just passed a sweeping LGBTQ rights bill

This stands no chance of being enacted given the composition of the Senate, but its food for visibility — and a reminder that in 30 states, LGBTQ people have no legal protections against discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations.

The Equality Act would extend civil rights protections to LGBTQ people.

Civilization Is Accelerating Extinction and Altering the Natural World at a Pace ‘Unprecedented in Human History’

A million species are at risk of extinction. I highly recommend Netflix's "One Strange Rock" about the formation of Earth and the evolution of life — it dramatizes just how fragile this whole thing is.

A dire United Nations report, based on thousands of scientific studies, paints an urgent picture of biodiversity loss and finds that climate change is amplifying the danger to humanity.

Trump touts new faith-based protections for health-care workers at National Day of Prayer ceremony

In effect, Trump's "religious liberty" rule allows healthcare providers to refuse treatment to LGBT folk, women who have had abortions, and people with HIV/AIDS.

UPDATE: Interesting tidbit from Jocelyn Samuels, former director under Obama of the office that issued the rule: HHS received just 10 religious liberty complaints during her tenure, but ~25,000 violations of civil rights. Discrimination against religious healthcare providers is extremely rare.

The rule was proposed in 2018.

Mueller Objected to Barr’s Description of Russia Investigation’s Findings on Trump

Basically, Barr undermined two years' worth of Mueller's work. It seems clear to me—because Trump went on national television and said he fired Comey for "the Russia thing"—that he obstructed justice. Mueller just intended to pass the ball to Congress.

The special counsel laid out his objections in a letter to the attorney general in March.

Statement from Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer’s offices:

“Attorney General Barr’s letter raises as many questions as it answers. The fact that Special Counsel Mueller’s report does not exonerate the president on a charge as serious as obstruction of justice demonstrates how urgent it is that the full report and underlying documentation be made public without any further delay. Given Mr. Barr’s public record of bias against the Special Counsel’s inquiry, he is not a neutral observer and is not in a position to make objective determinations about the report.

“And most obviously, for the president to say he is completely exonerated directly contradicts the words of Mr. Mueller and is not to be taken with any degree of credibility.

“Congress requires the full report and the underlying documents so that the Committees can proceed with their independent work, including oversight and legislating to address any issues the Mueller report may raise. The American people have a right to know.”

Barr to Deliver Mueller’s Key Findings to Lawmakers Today

Predictions? I’d guess there was little evidence of direct collusion. But plenty of evidence of obstruction of justice. After all, Trump went on television and said he fired Comey for “this Russia thing.” That’s far more egregious than what Clinton did that got him impeached.

The attorney general will release the main findings of the closely watched investigation into Russia’s election interference and whether Trump associates conspired.

I see you triumph. You inspire me. I can’t know what it’s like to be you, but I’ll always try to put myself in your shoes, and stand beside you.

Opinion | After Cohen, Republicans Are Now Trump’s Fixers

I kept thinking precisely this during the Cohen hearing: The Republicans are guilty of the precise lack of conscience they were accusing Cohen of. The blind allegiance to Trump—especially from the fire-and-brimstone types who are always grousing about family values—despite his obvious moral turpitude.

G.O.P. lawmakers who started by making excuses for the president’s most repulsive personal traits have now moved on to bedrock principles. They are headed for a reckoning.

OFFICIAL WELCOME: Vice President Mike Pence let me be the first person to officially welcome you to the City of Brotherly Love, and to my District in the State House!

To be clear, we’re a City of soaring diversity. We believe in the power of all people to live and to contribute: Black, Brown, Queer, Trans, Atheist, Immigrant, we want you and we’ll respect you.

So keep that in mind while you’re here raising money to attack more families, spread more lies, blaspheme with your bible, and maybe even talk to a woman without your wife in the room. We have plenty of them, and they’re pretty much all more powerful and more real than you have ever been.

So...get bent, then get out!
