Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky, and Nick de Pencier’s Anthropocene trilogy—comprised of Manufactured Landscapes, Watermark, and ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch—plays June 20-21 and 27-28

The Anthropocene Trilogy is an essential testament to how human beings have radically, rapidly, and dangerously reshaped the face of the natural world. Timed to the opening of The Great Acceleration, a retrospective of Burtynsky’s photography work at the International Center of Photography which sees him exploring similar concerns via the still image, we welcome the trio of Canadian filmmakers to Metrograph to screen and discuss these vital, disturbing nonfiction documents.

“The Anthropocene Trilogy represents nearly two decades of work capturing humanity’s indelible mark on the planet. In today’s escalating climate crisis, these films are more urgent than ever, offering a powerful visual reckoning that compels us to see, understand, and rethink our impact. I’m honored to be bringing them back to New York, where I hope they spark critical conversations and inspire meaningful change.” —Edward Burtynsky

“When Manufactured Landscapes, which I had not seen in years, was recently shown in Toronto, I was relieved and proud to see that it still resonates. It seems that with the current political climate, with the removal of any reference to climate change on US government websites, with the gutting of environmental laws, and the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles, this trilogy of films are still urgently relevant. We need to be reminded of the scale of our taking and that there are ways to live in harmony with our beautiful planet, which is also our (only) home.” —Jennifer Baichwal

The exhibition “Edward Burtynsky: The Great Acceleration” runs June 19 - September 28 .

Announcing our newest release!

From ScreenDaily: EXCLUSIVE: Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to this year’s Berlinale world premiere Monk In Pieces.

The film profiles the interdisciplinary artist Meredith Monk, who rose up in New York’s male-dominated downtown arts scene of the 1960s and 70s.

Monk went on to establish herself as a leading light in the music, opera, dance, visual arts, and film, earning particular renown for her innovative vocal techniques. She received the National Medal of Arts Award from President Obama in 2015.

The feature includes interviews with Björk, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, and fellow composer Philip Glass.

Monk In Pieces, a film by Billy Shebar, was produced, written, and directed by Shebar and David Roberts, and produced by Susan Margolin.

The documentary just received its US premiere at Seattle International Film Festival and previously played Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival.

Zeitgeist Films will release theatrically at IFC Center in New York this summer followed by a nationwide rollout.

Co-president Emily Russo negotiated the deal with Margolin. In a statement Russo and co-president Nancy Gerstman said: “For the many legions of Monk fans, and for those who are not familiar with her work at all, this film delivers on every level. We loved Monk’s own telling of her life-long struggle as a true visionary and artist.”

Don’t miss filmmaker Rachel Elizabeth Seed in person this Thursday, Saturday and Monday in Los Angeles for Q&As with special guests about her beautiful new film.

Winner of the Truer Than Fiction Award at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards and a New York Times Critic’s Pick, A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY is an intimate, genre-bending portrait of the filmmaker’s trailblazing mother, Sheila Turner Seed – a vibrant and pioneering journalist, photographer, and filmmaker, who died suddenly and tragically when Rachel was just 18 months old. Uncovering the vast archive Turner Seed produced, including lost interviews with iconic photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Cecil Beaton, Lisette Model, and Gordon Parks, and others, Rachel attempts to build a posthumous relationship with her mother through her interviews, photographs, journals, films, and the stories of those who remember her. The result is an unlikely mother-daughter conversation that evades time and space, exploring universal themes of memory, loss, and legacy.
