When Culture Was Comes to School. NBC News' Antonia Hylton & Mike Hixenbaugh’s #1 hit podcast, Southlake, tells the story of how an idyllic Texas city became a symbol of a new national reckoning over race & education. They've heard from parents & educators across the US who say the same thing is happening in their districts. The journalists will be joined by author George M. Johnson & school librarian Carolyn Foote to discuss the next front in the classroom culture war: The movement to ban books on race, s*x, gender & s*xuality.

This short documentary tells the story about a group of middle school students creating short films inspired by the "United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child" (UNCRC) .

During the course, students learn how to use technology to better express their thoughts about core values that affect them daily. The UNCRC provides a strong motivation for students to create their stop motion stories, notably increasing their awareness about their Rights, improving their vocabulary and encouraging their critical thinking skills.

The UNCRC, is the basis of all of Unicef’s work . It is the most complete statement of children’s rights ever produced and is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history.

This course was promoted by the Museum of the Moving Image and the NYC Department of Education , designed, conducted, filmed and edited by Film Producer and Educator Pablo Herrera at the IS 192 The Linden, Queens, New York City, 2018.

Students at the “Manhattan International High School are creating a documentary based on the reading of "Homegoing", Yaa Gyasi first novel that brims with compassion the horrific Middle Passage at the "glowing white" Castle, one of about forty commercial fortresses erected by Europeans on the Gold Coast. The structure looms like a curse over Gyasi's sprawling epic of African families exploited by — and at times exploiting — the traffic in human chattel, tracing the 300-year-long repercussions of an original sin.

Artist Jane Lawrence and documentary filmmaker Pablo Herrera are guiding students in the journey of connecting the book with their own immigration stories through moving images.

Homelessness in the City — Colectivo Piloto

New York City Five Boroughs released a collection of photography and video archives about the NYC homeless population captured between 2013 and 2020. The collection aims to start a dialogue around a harsh reality hitting the most populous city in the US.

The debate around homelessness always circles around the consequences, mostly focused on city shelters and mental illness, but it rarely goes further in analysing the root causes. Homelessness is a structural problem in a developed country reporting exceeding large disparities between the rich and the poor with high levels of income inequality. Homelessness is largely avoidable, or at least could be less painful, by guaranteeing affordable housing, education and universal health care. We can, and must, address the most immediate consequences and have a debate about city shelters and mental illness, but we can also go further by pressuring our political leaders to pass legislation to address the root causes of homelessness and disparities in the US.

NYC Five Boroughs is produced by Colectivo Piloto (thecplab) and curated by Pablo Herrera.
