Here's another #FlashbackFriday from former Bookbinders Guild President Paul Graham Stanley's archives, with a special focus on a series of daredevil events in the 1990s which raised funds to support literacy.

These photos were taken during a skydiving trip to Gardiner, New York, on August 28, 1993, according to Paul. "We went upstate and we took 26 people in a bus from the industry and everybody raised money . . . so, that was another one. That was 26 people!"

It’s #FlashbackFriday courtesy of Paul Graham Stanley, former president, Bookbinders Guild of New York, who, as part of August’s Literacy and Justice conversation with Brigid Black (our vice president), discussed the Guild’s history of employing audacious “daredevil” events as a way to raise funds to support literacy. ⠀

First came the softball games, with a direct benefit to the Literacy Assistance Center. Then, in early summer, 1993: “They put a crane over the Hudson River . . . and people [were] doing bungee jumping! So, within about an hour I had nine people signed up to do a charity bungee jump. We had an absolute blast!"

Congratulations to this STRANGE STARS, which was selected by our judges to be part of the 33rd Annual New York Book Show!

Melville House Publishing commissioned me to work on the cover for Jason Heller’s 'Strange Stars', a book which tells the story of the rock artists who brought sci-fi's 'cosmic flare' to their lyrics.

Looking at David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and many more, the book has also recently won a merit award from The Book Industry Guild of New York's New York Book Show for it's great design in the General Trade Hardcover Nonfiction Cover/Jacket Subcategory.

The 33rd Annual New York Book Show
10/16/2019

The 33rd Annual New York Book Show

Hosted by the Book Industry Guild of New York (BIGNY), the New York Book Show is an annual event that offers publishing and printing professionals an opportunity to mingle while honoring the best examples of quality book design and production from the previous year.

The show’s aim is to showcase the best books as judged by a panel of industry professionals. Judges evaluate manufacturing, production, and design qualities of entries in six main and a myriad of subcategories. The winners are selected from hundreds of entries sent in by publishers and suppliers from around the country. The books that are submitted for judging are donated to programs that help promote literacy following the show.
