In a significant advancement for environmentally friendly air travel, Rolls-Royce has reported the successful full-power testing of its massive UltraFan demo jet engine using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). As the world's largest jet engine at 140 inches and boasting a 64 MW output, the UltraFan stands out not only for its size but also for being the most powerful engine to date.
In static tests, it demonstrated a maximum thrust exceeding 85,000 pounds, with the potential for scalability to 110,000 pounds for future narrow-body or wide-body aircraft expected in the 2030s. Rolls-Royce's CEO, Tufan Erginbilgic, emphasized that achieving full power with the UltraFan demonstrator underscores the company's leadership in innovative and sustainable aviation technology.
Beyond its impressive power, the Rolls-Royce UltraFan incorporates a "suite of new technologies" that enhance fuel efficiency, resulting in lower emissions and improved sustainability. The engine's fuel efficiency surpasses the market-leading Trent XWB by 10% (currently the most efficient large aero-engine in service) and is 25% better than the first-generation Trent engines.
Rolls-Royce envisions that to achieve Net Zero flying by 2050, a combination of highly efficient gas turbines like the UltraFan, operating on 100% SAF, could contribute around 80% of the overall solution, according to Simon Burr, Rolls-Royce Group Director of Engineering, Technology, and Safety.
