The capability of design to bring about transformation is one of the many reasons we are continually motivated by the great work being done. Here, two influential entries to the Poster 2024 competition lent their voices to peace in Ukraine.

The first poster was created for the Ogaki Poster Museum in Japan by João Machado Design (Portugal) and features the words "No War" replacing bombs.

The second is from Shuichi Nogami, Nogami Design Office (Japan), who used the two colors of the Ukraine flag to shape the letters 'HELP' in different angles to communicate the message to "Save Ukraine." This poster earned the Jury Prize in the "Japan Typography Annual 2023."

It may not be much, but we trust these posters can act as a reminder that no matter how small, we can all do something to make a mark on the world. Learn more about these two posters on the blog. Enter your posters today — from calls for change to promotion at Graphis.com.

"Talent is a starting point. Persistence and focus are how you take it to the goal." New Talent is an ever-growing category that we are committed to featuring the work of. Here are two new entries for you to check out on the blog at Graphis.com.

Texas Christian University student Ellen Brown's entry originated from an assignment by professor and designer Bill Brammer (FUSION29), who instructed students to create a magazine that matched a target identity and audience. Brown created “LUNR Magazine” to represent NASA with all its wonder, quantum physics, and scientific discoveries presented to readers through relevant stories, photography, and design choices. ArtCenter College of Design Professor Gerardo Herrera, Design Studio Nova, launched the first studio course that integrated a graduate thesis project. Student Chloe Zhang masterfully branded a project entitled “hypna”. The concept for the company was to create a theoretical sleeping supplement designed to help individuals enjoy a deeper sleep, wake more energized, and restore their natural circadian rhythm. Joao Oliveira from Onrepeat Studio (UK) championed the creation of a vibrant and thought-provoking brand identity for EBO – Open Finance. Their mission was to develop an effortlessly engaging strategy that would capture their ethos of empowerment & openness, as well as accurately represent digital tokens through a unique design language. Each element in Joao's creative concept draws inspiration from "blockchain" technology; where individual blocks work together harmoniously towards creating more complex structures with endless possibilities!

This powerful generative design system creates an endless array of visuals for any application – from enthralling animations to user avatars, layouts, and symbols. Its motion is inspired by the concept of transactions; two or more intersecting shapes (EBO blocks) quickly create a unique new structure that reflects EBOs vision and values in a dynamic way. With primary hues like blue, yellow, orange and gray alongside bright accent colors such as pink green and purple- this project brings life to every scene. The result is nothing short of stunning - yet another Gold-winning success story coming out of Onrepeat studio!

Looking for some inspiration for your next poster project? Check out these two Gold-winning and Silver-winning pieces from Poster 2023.

The Gold award honors Mikhail Lychkovskiy’s (Belarus) hypnotic series “Diorama,” designed using a number of stamps and techniques including stencils, screen printing and collage. Created as a personal project it was ultimately used to reflect the music of the band Diorama. It's maze-like design made up of repeating Tetris-esque fractals, could be taken as a reflection of the band’s sound with the “sound of the poster.”

“The Sun On The Sea” is the Silver-winning work of Owen Gildersleeve (UK) celebrating the start of the New Year and the joy in those little things, such as personal work and exploration, grabbing that calming headspace when you can and trying to get out of the studio more to catch the sun on the sea.

From the hundreds of pieces submitted, all awards are chosen by a panel of industry experts. We hope you enjoy the work as much as we do!

Venus Williams' new textile collection inspired a print advertising campaign "The Muse Collection by V Starr for Wolf-Gordon" celebrating strong women of diverse backgrounds. For Ahoy Studios' concept they envisioned ‘totems’ sculpted by models and set against dreamy landscapes evoking women’s connection to nature, bringing the textiles to life through human sculptures. Creating the sculptural compositions to showcase the materials was challenging, laborious, and fun.

NEW TALENT 2023 ENTRY:
Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design recently launched an alternative undergraduate final-year project called ‘Integrated Capstone Project’, where students of different design disciplines work collaboratively on identifiable social issues.

The Integrated Capstone Project includes seven projects on different topics including local Hong Kong topics like community revitalisation, food waste and SEN children but other global issues like air purification, future work and mask waste due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initially the team of Ho-lam Thomas WONG, Yan-wing Natalie NG, and Hoi-yan Zoe KWOK

, led by Professor Roberto VILCHIS ECHEVERRI, set out to create one central theme to brand the whole exhibition however it was difficult as the topics were quite diverse. So they moved to another approach which consisted of finding symbols to represent each project and discovered that isometric monograms were not only giving depth to the design but also the message of ‘dimension’ and ‘macroscopic view’. More on Viva Magenta!

Channeling the essence of PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta, Pantone worked with its longtime creative partner Huge, to engage in a design experiment that explores the relationship— the tensions—between new technology and human creativity.

Working with the AI generative tool Midjourney, the design team created the visual manifestation of PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta by incorporating the messages and ideas embodied by the color to curate an immersive world that examines the connections between nature and technology. The key visual—a bold and brave statement that amplifies the fearless yet natural elements of PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta, designed with the help of artificial intelligence—serves as an invitation into an optimistic and endless new ecosystem to be explored, called “the Magentaverse.”

These two Poster 2024 submissions speak directly to the heart...
Director, cinematographer John Madere, Ditch Plains Productions, teamed with Lynda Decker of Decker Design for the poster "Rocco Up," to promote Madere's documentary movie that captures the heartfelt story of a severely autistic boy whose father taught him to surf as a non-verbal means of connecting with him. Along their journey the Montauk NY surf community was instrumental in cheering him on to stand “UP” on the surfboard. A drone camera was used for the key art.

"Women Life Freedom"... When Meaghan A. Dee asked her friend if there was anything she could do to support her during the protests in Iran, she replied, design a poster—that people outside of Iran need to be talking about what is happening and to bring continued international attention to the protests. She chose to create the words "women, life, freedom" using snips of her own hair, as so many women are exposing or chopping off their hair in acts of brave defiance.

Yan Yan, a student at ArtCenter College of Design, created an entire campaign titled "Mental Health for All" for MHA, the largest grassroots mental health organization in America. From website layout, environmental graphics, posters, and lanyards the visual system is designed to reflect the soul of the MHA brand, and is extended across all touch points. This work continues to drive the visual expression of MHA and, as such, mental health awareness itself across the globe. The resulting graphics are designed to be unobtrusive to their surroundings and more of a gesture towards self-education and kindness.

JOURNAL SPOTLIGHT: Danish designer and educator Hansen's Wheels & Waves is her brainchild; however, it is much more than just her. You could say it is a new way of organizing a collective of designers and educators who have committed themselves to seeing the communication and development of the coming generations as two sides of the same coin. As vice chairman of the Danish Book Craft Society, a board member of the Bienal del Cartel Bolivia BICeBé. Bolivia Poster Biennial BICeBé, an advisory board member for the Odisha Design Council (ODC), and a member of the CIDEA International Design Educator Group and the 中欧国际设计文化协会 China Europe International Design Culture Association, it's astonishing that she even has the time to create.
