Organizations have spent decades learning to understand their customers. The next challenge is for them to understand themselves.

Sean McKay will tackle this problem at Shift UX 2026 by introducing a practical framework for connecting customer insights, business strategy, operational context, and AI into shared organizational awareness.

Sean will unpack:
🔹 Why collective understanding is becoming a strategic capability
🔹 How AI amplifies both strong and weak organizational thinking
🔹 Why human-centered practitioners are uniquely equipped to architect the systems that drive alignment, decision-making, and resilience

Whether you're working inside the system or stepping outside it to find your voice, we are all called to be Architects of the Future.

As a pioneer in human-centered design, Sarah B. Nelson advocates for human imagination, dignity, and meaning in the age of AI. In this session, she will share her career path and explore:

💡 The creativity that lies in the dialog between humans and machine.
💡 Creating opportunities in her community to help people connect with their inner muse.
💡 How you can find your own voice again when you start listening to it.

What should leaders consider before implementing AI-driven automation? Most conversations stop at what can be automated. The harder question is what should be.

That distinction is the core of a new book from Stefanie Hutka: What Your Machines Should Do: The Science and Strategy of Human-Centered Automation.

In this book you'll learn how to:
💡 Build intuition about what the technology can and cannot do
💡 Anticipate the consequences of automation decisions
💡 Design tools to think with you, not for you
💡 Evaluate automated systems, before and after they ship

Sensemaking isn't simply about organizing information. It's also about understanding people, adapting how we communicate, and helping others turn complexity into something they can actually use.

Louis Rosenfeld talks with information architect, author, and longtime collaborator Abby Covert about how her work evolved from information architecture into the broader practice of sensemaking—and why she believes that work extends far beyond people with "IA" in their job titles.

Abby also offers a preview of Shift UX, Rosenfeld Media's hybrid conference on September 23–25, where she will be leading the Sensemaking pillar with fellow sensemakers including Dan Brown, Sophia Prater, Hang Xu, Joe Elmendorf, Melissa Burnett, and Dave Hoffer.

Listen to learn:
✦ Why UX skills may outlast traditional UX roles and titles
✦ How Shift UX is rethinking the traditional conference experience
✦ Why sensemaking is personal—and looks different for everyone
✦ Why adapting how you communicate can make your work more effective

AI systems are trained on data, but how they behave is very much influenced by context.

The structures and relationships we encode into information shape how AI understands the world and responds within it. How that context is designed directly affects the quality, safety, and trustworthiness of AI.

Join Paz Perez to reframe information architecture as behavior design. She'll explore how traditional IA practices become active inputs that guide AI behavior, highlighting the need to make information meaningful in context for both people and AI systems.

The UX playbook has changed.

Roles are blending, titles are losing meaning, and org charts are in flux. Catt Small sees this moment not as a crisis, but as an opportunity for designers to stop waiting for direction and start defining their own value.

With design work spanning Asana, Etsy, SoundCloud, and Nasdaq, Catt brings hard-won perspective to the Shift UX stage as our opening keynote speaker 🎉

She'll share how to treat career ladders as an ongoing conversation rather than a fixed path, and how to communicate your value upward so leadership can actually act on it.

Join Catt and the rest of our incredible lineup September 23-25 in NYC or live online.

You have a component library and some helpful colleagues. Not a design system.

Every gap your team papered over with a Slack thread or a conversation with a senior designer is now a hole for AI to fall straight through. AI doesn't compensate. It takes what's visible, follows a likely pattern, and makes something plausible. But plausible isn't the same as correct.

The scope of what a design system needs to capture is expanding. It's always been more than components and patterns — it's the broader product context that gives those artifacts meaning. You and your colleagues have carried that informally. AI needs it to be explicit.

Robin Cannon's session is about what it means to build something AI can actually use without helpful humans standing behind it.

The browser wars never really ended. They just changed platforms.

A generation ago, Jeffrey Zeldman helped end the first round by making one case relentlessly: build to standards, not to vendors. Now the same fight is playing out over how AI agents render interfaces across Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Teams, and Slack.

Zeldman joins Patrick Neeman to trace the line from "best viewed in Netscape" to "best experienced in one assistant," and to make the case for what agentic UI actually needs. Expect hard-won lessons from the first standards war and a clear-eyed look at MCP and A2UI.
