As we come to the end of the week, we want to flashback to our 2009 production of "Four Saints in Three Acts", the opera with music by Virgil Thomson and libretto by Gertrude Stein. Encompass New Opera Theatre presented the oratorio version of Four Saints in Three Acts, prepared by Virgil Thomson himself, directed by Nancy Rhodes, and an orchestra conducted by Mara Waldman at the Martin E. Segal Theater Center at the City Center at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

Check out our feature in the New York Times and other pics from this production!!

Time for another post! Reminiscing about our fabulous Jazz Cabaret Gala featuring the incredible Billy Stritch!

He is one of the premier singer-pianists on the New York and national jazz and cabaret scenes, and began his career in Houston, Texas, where he formed the vocal trio Montgomery, Plant and Stritch. They performed in New York and Europe from 1983-1990. A chance meeting with Liza Minnelli in March of 1991 resulted in her asking him to create vocal arrangements for the record-breaking extravaganza Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall. In addition to his 25-year collaboration with Liza, Billy recently toured with the legendary Tony Bennett as Tony’s pianist and musical director. As solo entertainer, he has performed his own shows including tributes to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman in concert halls and nightclubs across the country. Billy also serves as music director for such leading vocalists as Linda Lavin, Christine Ebersole, Paulo Szot and Marilyn Maye. He is the co-writer of the Grammy-winning song “Does He Love You” recorded by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis.

Broadway's very own Chita Rivera and Danny Burstein will be honored by Encompass New Opera Theatre!
I noticed this was a community of opera fans, and wanted to share with you all another opportunity to enjoy classical singing from the comfort and safety of your very own home!

I recently came across the Giulio Gari Foundation’s Official page, where they host their ‘Salon Series’. This series aims to spotlight young international classical singers by offering audiences an inside look into how they discovered and pursued their passion for opera. This foundation supports and fosters the growth of operatic singers covering all ranges and backgrounds.

Last week’s episode featured Metropolitan Opera’s very own Errin Duane Brooks. Brooks is a promising young tenor who most recently made his debut in their award-winning performance of ‘Porgy and Bess’. I loved listening to him speak about his inspirations, and watching the performances that lead to a breakthrough in his career.

The episodes are free to all viewers, and can be easily accessed through the Giulio Gari Foundation Official page, or through their official site at giuliogari.org !

I think this is a great opportunity to bring the opera community back together to tune into some of their favorite artists. I highly recommend checking them out!

As my capstone to Art Song Colorado's Fundraising February, Victor Herbert Renaissance Project Live has featured us in their newsletter. Take a look at all the good work they do back in NYC and their lovely feature on my little art song group:
What Happens When you Leave NYC
We know, we know, to live, work and play in New York City is a goal of lots of students up to their ears in college courses right now. Every January and September, recent grads flood the streets of New York looking for that elusive “break.” They may be singers, actors, directors, choreographers, or designers, but they all think that if they “can make it here, I’ll make it anywhere,” to quote a favorite Sinatra song. And so the waves flow in, but relatively soon, the waves flow out. There are tons of reasons: the starkness of constant “Thanks yous” (which is the NYC translation of “NO”); the rent; the drain on finances; the office job one can get anywhere; marriage; babies; and “I just can’t take it any mores.” Keep that in mind “O you with one eye on the text book and the other day dreaming of New York City.”

Yet there is abundant life after New York City or should we say “in spite of New York City.” We keep up with our artists through social media and email blasts. It was through these that we discovered ART SONG COLORADO. This relatively new endeavor is headed by Eapen Leubner (Eapen Leubner, Tenor and www.eapenleubner.com) who played Christian in a newly restored version of Victor Herbert’s Cyrano de Bergerac (in NYC of course) back in the Fall of 2013. That production was the true beginning of VHRP LIVE! He’s an amazing young tenor.

Meet Colorado Art Song

Eapen lived and worked in New York until 2014. He performs across the nation from New York to Florida to California to Alaska. In 2012 he made his international debut in Albania for their 100th anniversary of Independence. He sang leading roles with many NYC opera companies, Light Opera of New York, Chelsea Opera, Encompass New Opera Theatre and more. Eapen gained a sterling reputation for modern operas such as Tom Cipullo’s “Glory Denied”, Charles Fussell’s “The Astronaut’s Tale” and Sameer Ramchandran’s “Deirdre”. A more recent convert to operetta, Eapen sang in “Sweethearts” and “The Mikado” in addition to “Cyrano.”

When his third child arrived, Eapen realized that perhaps a one-bedroom apartment may not be quite enough space. After searching the city for apartments, he decided to move to the mountains of Colorado. (Be still our hearts!). After the move, Eapen was looking for a musical opportunity outside of his solo work. A frequent recitalist, he always was surprised that his friends outside the music industry were often confused as to the recital genre. They liked the music but he heard comments like, “I didn’t know to read the notes in the program” and “I would have loved to know more about why you chose those songs.” It seemed like the context for art song performance had been lost for those new to the genre.

With this feedback in mind, Eapen recorded his first album with fellow Ithaca College Alumnus, Mallory Bernstein, pianist, under the name Denver Art Song Project. The group began performing recitals and evolved from formal recitals to a more casual format with digital art and super-title projection, staging and storytelling. The style can be found online web show , . Eapen hopes to introduce brand new audiences to this tiny genre of classical music by bringing back the context around art song. ‘If I introduce a person to art song and they later pay to see Stephanie Blythe in recital, I have succeeded,” he says. In addition to live and online performance, the group’s second recording was Schubert’s “Die Schoene Muellerin” for voice and guitar with Eapen and his engineer, Michael Bevers. Over the next few years, the group began hiring
other performers including Stephanie Ann Ball, Soprano who curated “The Pillars of African-American Art Song”. Last September, Eapen and Stephanie spoke about the show at the Videmus conference at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Eapen has always been interested in emerging technology and how it can open up classical music to younger audiences. He began playing in that space with collaboration with The People's Theatre of Denver, a local experimental theater group. The first result was Lee Hoiby’s “The Jabberwocky”. The video combines
live action, puppets and computer effects for a unique music video take on this art song. The group began experimenting with 360-degree videos. Be sure to
watch just such a video by clicking on the picture below. You can look around a virtual art gallery as pictures move around the space. Eapen curated the
pictures to reflect each verse of “Das Wandern” by Schubert. Or just enjoy the performers and super-titles.

In 2020, Denver Art Song Project completed its transformation to Art Song Colorado. The group took the new name after they began performing state-wide from Denver to Grand Junction to Ft. Collins and Colorado Springs. The group is now co-led by Colorado Mesa University professors Graham Anduri and Stefanie Kavas Anduri. Margaret Ozaki Graves, a frequent soloist with the group, assists on the Front range. Their board includes educators from University of Colorado and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Art Song Colorado applied for 501c3 status and is now looking to raise $6,000 to support their inaugural season. You can donate HERE or follow along on social media HERE. Eapen says, “working with Victor Herbert Renaissance Project was a major inspiration
when I started my group, we even stole one quarter of their name! Joking aside, VHRP showed me how impeccable performance in a narrow genre can find an
audience of ardent fans. My work always calls back to my mentors so expect hear Herbert as we continue to grow and thrive.”
TIME FOR ANOTHER ARTIST HIGHLIGHT!
Introducing Tascha Anderson as DANIEL in our production of SUSANNA by G.F. Handel

Praised by Opera News as "a warm, elegant mezzo,” Tascha Anderson originally hails from and has also been esteemed as “emotionally rich,” “a brassy mezzo with flair,” "vivacious," and "a wild one."

Up next, Ms. Anderson will make her debut with Oratorio Society of Richmond in their unsettling production of Händel's Susanna to be performed on International Women's Day. Proceeds will go to Safe Harbor, a Women's Shelter in . Ms. Anderson will portray the role of Daniel in the performance, and will sing excerpts of both Daniel and Susanna on NPR Richmond to promote the event.

An advocate of new American opera and modern classical music, Ms. Anderson created the role of Pamela in Evan Mack’s Roscoe, first premiering at Seagle Music Colony, followed by a concert with Albany Symphony, where she sang alongside soprano Deborah Voigt. Albany Times Union regarded her as “a standout.”

Last January, she performed with Grammy Award Winning Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) in the Boston premiere and recording of Haroun and the Sea of Stories. as well as a recording, with Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), one of several New Music recordings she is featured on. Shortly after in March, she made her debut with Encompass New Opera Theatre to perform arias from one of her favorite operas Angel of the Amazon, by Evan Mack as part of a concert at the National Opera Center sponsered by The American Opera Project.

With an extensive background in dance training, Tascha is equally comfortable in the Musical Theatre repertoire. She has made appearances as Petra (A Little Night Music) both Florinda and the Stepmother (Into the Woods), Eulalie Shinn (The Music Man) and has appeared as featured ensemble in many others. BroadwayWorld described Tascha's dancing as Succubus in Swift Creek Mill Theatre's The Mystery of Edwin Drood as "magical."

Notable recent credits and favorite roles include the title role in The Tragedy of Carmen with Tri-Cities Opera and Charlottesville Opera, Florinda in Into the Woods with Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, Pastore 4 in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with The Chautauqua Opera Company, and Jacqueline in Gounod’s Le médecin malgré lui with Odyssey Opera, under the baton of Grammy Award winning maestro Gil Rose. The Boston Globe hailed Tascha's debut with Odyssey Opera as "memorable" and Opera Magazine celebrated her as a "present, well-honed, and agile mezzo."

Last fall, Ms. Anderson was happy to make her debut with the Glens Falls Symphony in New York to sing Candelas in Manuel De Falla’s masterpiece El amor brujo. Glens Falls Chronicle praised Tascha's "fiery drama and dusk-edged mezzo vocals."

Ms. Anderson holds an M.M. in Voice Performance from Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and a B.A. with music emphasis in Voice Performance from Pepperdine University.
