Goat Tree Productions is a film production company composed of two young filmmakers/journalists, Zoe Hamilton and Anne Munger who are committed to examining complex social issues through innovative storytelling. Goat Tree utilizes both journalism and film to focus on social justice issues, the stories of women, and sharing the voices that don't get the attention they should. Goat Tree was founded

in 2014, after Zoe and Anne completed their first short, "Nasbandi," which explored issues of female sterilization in rural India. The short premiered at the 2015 SR Film Festival in NYC, with additional screenings at the 2015 Middlebury New Filmmaker's Festival, the 2016 Culture Unplugged Film Festival, the London School of Economics, and Northwestern University. Zoe and Anne also wrote a series of accompanying articles while working on "Nasbandi," which have been published in Al Jazeera and Quartz. Goat Tree is currently in production for a feature-length documentary about reproductive justice in India.

New episode: "When Family Planning Means Sterilization"

Katie interviews Zoe Hamilton, a researcher and expert on India’s family planning policies, about the country’s complex relationship with female sterilization and reproductive justice. Zoe and co-director Anne Munger are working in Mumbai on a feature-length documentary called Sterilized, which examines the Indian government's use of sterilization as a means of family planning and population control. In the interview, Katie and Zoe discuss how India's controversial family planning policies affect the lives of women. They examine the political forces - in India and in our own countries - that lead women to have tenuous control over their bodies and choices.

You can watch the trailer for the film at GoatTreeProductions.com, or follow its progress on Facebook via Goat Tree Productions, Twitter , or Instagram at .

Unsafe abortions kill one woman every two hours in India. The global gag rule will make this worse...

Abortion is legal in India, but in some areas, 80 per cent of women do not know this. Many take matters into their own hands instead, using untested herbal remedies or visiting backstreet clinics – one death every two hours is caused by unsafe abortion, research suggests.

Check this out! It's a real life letter from Mahatma Gandhi about his views on birth control. He was writing to a British campaigner (who advocated the introduction of modern contraception in India) to say while he agreed with the need for birth control, he felt abstinence was the solution. This was before India introduced a formal family planning program. Fascinating!! Plus getting to touch a piece of history, just amazing! Thanks again LSE!!

Big news!! Last week India's Supreme Court ruled to close the mass sterilization camps that have defined population policies for decades. This is HUGE and we published an article about the implications.

The Court pointed to the need for India to better ensure policies are human rights focused. But will the ruling go far enough? That's yet to be seen.

That's why this documentary is SO important. As India goes through this fundamental shift in policy, we want to be there to document it and to show what women feel about these new policies.

A Landmark ruling last week means mass sterilization camps will end. But what’s next for family planning in India? In the world’s largest democ...
