The Power Station at BerkleeNYC Mural: Preservation Through Transformation

During its grand reopening, Power Station at BerkleeNYC proudly unveiled a new mural honoring artists who recorded at the historic studio by local artist Mikel Glass. The Mural features dynamic musical artifacts with striking depictions of historically significant artists who recorded in the space.

Following the unveiling, Grammy-nominated vocalist, producer, songwriter, musician, author, and actress Nona Hendryx spoke about her impression of the renovated space, saying “This place has been reborn, revitalized, transformed, which is just amazing. You cannot recreate the studios here--it’s just impossible.” Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and activist Cyndi Lauper discussed her memories of recording in the studios, saying, “To sing in the Power Station, to play in the Power Station was so huge. The kids--the youth--they need a place like this...you’ve given them a future.”

Roger Brown & Annette Philip - Mark My Brow - Tribute to Tagore

The Berklee Indian Ensemble has risen to prominence as one of the most storied musical collectives at Berklee, having attracted visiting artists including A.R. Rahman, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shreya Ghoshal, Indian Ocean, Clinton Cerejo, and many others. nearing the end of his tenure at Berklee, Roger Brown, who served as Berklee’s President for 17 years, reached out to Annette Philip, founder of the Indian Ensemble to propose a song-writing collaboration based on the poem “Earth” by Bengali Nobel Laureate and polymath, Rabrindranath Tagore.

Tagore (1861-1941) was a poet, playwright, essayist, novelist and musician who, in 1913, became the first non-European to win a Nobel Prize for Literature. He had a powerful impact on the development of the art and literature of modern India and beyond. Aside from Tagore's global impact, Roger and his wife Linda had a personal connection as well — they had selected excerpts of this poem to be read at their wedding 34 years ago.

Annette and Roger invited some of their favorite musicians to bring this composition to life, and recorded it at the newly renovated Power Station/BerkleeNYC studios.

Honoring one of India’s most prolific thinkers, “Mark My Brow” is a theatrical adaptation of Tagore’s evocative imagery in the poem and personalizes it with reflections on being both a child and a parent; wondering if any of the strivings we all pursue make a difference. From introspective reflection, the song evolves into a celebration in gratitude for life itself.

Utilizing the brand new video capabilities and infrastructure at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, "Mark My Brow" also showcases the breadth of cinematic live performance capture that is now available in the studios.

About Power Station at BerkleeNYC

A landmark public-private-nonprofit partnership bringing together Berklee, the City of New York, and musician/investor Pete Muller has been formed to revitalize the historic studio on West 53rd Street most recently known as Avatar Studios. The facility will be renamed Power Station at BerkleeNYC in a nod to the studio’s original name and to the building’s original use to supply power to midtown Manhattan residents.

The recording studios—where artists like Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Madonna, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Bob Dylan, the cast of Hamilton, and many others recorded iconic albums—will be transformed into a state-of-the-art recording and video production facility for the city’s music, theater, television, and film industries. The building where Power Station is currently housed was a former Consolidated Edison power relay station.
