Opening 12/2 Q Department heading to Art Basel Miami with Marco Brambilla: After Utopia
Q Department’s collaboration on Marco Brambilla: After Utopia, opening at The Wolfsonian FIU during Art Basel
After Utopia explores how we grapple with ideas about the future. Brambilla uses artificial intelligence (AI) and computer graphics (CG) to construct virtual landscapes inspired by world’s fairs, combining and animating images of iconic structures from 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century expositions. Reimagined together and interpreted through new tools, these visual symbols of nostalgia and optimism create surreal scenes each an expression of our aspirations toward better living through technology. Brambilla pulled from The Wolfsonian’s archives to shape his work, which is shown in dialogue with the collection exhibition World’s Fairs: Visions of Tomorrow.
For the soundtrack, Drazen Bosnjak and Q Department transformed AI-generated interpretations of the national anthems of world’s fair host nations, reducing them to their emotional essence and reshaping them into a sparse, ascending composition. The result subtly reflects the installation’s inquiry into the imagination we bring to our visions of tomorrow.
